We went to Universal Resort this past weekend! It was a super quick trip, but we had a great time. Before I tell you about that though – I have to tell you a story of something that happened on that trip. When you have kids, you worry about them. Especially during a vacation. Are they going to be OK at the pool? Will I lose them in a crowd at the park? Do we have a plan to meet back up if we do get separated??
During our vacation I had the hands down, scariest Mom moment I have ever had. We stayed at a Universal Resort hotel, the Cabana Bay. It was a really comfortable hotel. I liked it a lot! It was decorated in a funky retro theme.
One thing I noticed was that the rooms were very quiet. You know how sometimes you are at a hotel and you can hear everything going on around you? Well this was quite the opposite, even though I know there were a lot of kids and families around us. Given that, we all slept very well at night. One night, a loud noise woke me up. I had no idea what the noise was, but I do know it was around 1 am, and I soon noticed my husband had been woken up too.
I was ready to go back to sleep because it was just one noise, and then no other noises. But my husband said – “are the kids here?” I got up, and looked at the queen bed that my kids were sleeping in next to us. I saw my daughter, and what I thought was my son laying there. Then I stumbled towards the bathroom door, which I could see was half way open, with no one in it. I wondered, “why would someone come in our room and take our kids?”. So I went back close to the bed because it was pretty dark in the room.
That’s when I noticed my son was not there. I screamed “Zachary’s not here!!!!”. Right about then I put two and two together and remembered that my son sleep walks. I ran over to the hotel room door and sure enough, there was my son wandering in a stupor half way down the hall!
I called to him and he came back to the room, very confused from being asleep and the bright lights of the hall in the middle of the night. I led him to bed and within just a minute he was sound asleep. The sound that had woke me up was the door slamming when he left our room. The doors are extremely solid, and shut very loud. That’s a good thing because just think of what could have happened if I went back to sleep or never even heard the sound of the door!!
OMG. My heart jumped out of my chest at that moment that I realized he was missing. I also remembered that we were so tired that night that I didn’t bother to set the inside locks on the door. It was such a nice hotel, I never really thought twice about it because I think those locks are to keep the bad guys from getting into my room, not to block my kids from getting out! Never, ever had I considered that option. But trust me, from now on, I will never forget to do it.
After that event I felt like I didn’t sleep at all. Every time I heard him move, I looked over to him to make sure he wasn’t getting up. He doesn’t even sleep walk all the time at home – just on a random occasion. And where was he going? The elevator?? (we were on the 7th floor) Not surprisingly, he had no memory of the event.
So there you have it. My scariest moment. I just had to get that out of my brain!

Q: Have you ever had any scary moments with your kids (or spouse/pets)?
Q: Do you, or anyone you know, sleep walk?
OMG Lisa!! I have done exactly the same to my mum…. Got up in the middle of the night and decided to resume my sleep in one of the armchairs in the living room who’s back was facing the door so when she got up and started looking for me she couldnt find me and totally flipped! And the keys were on the door!! I must have been like 8 yo then.. after that she always locked and took the keys away… I havent slept walk in ages tho! so glad he is OK!!!

Oh wow, that would have been so scary!!! I think all of you sleepwalkers need to just stay put 🙂
WOW I can feel your fear in your words. I am so sorry that happened. I’m glad that door woke you up and you were able to get to Zachary before anything potentially dangerous happened. I don’t blame you for not being able to fall back asleep. Holy shit, being a mom must be stressful.
I’m trying to think of any scary student moments but I can’t think of any. I have had scary cat moments (not to be compared in any way to losing a kid or a student!). Sometimes, we can’t find Jelly. We look everywhere… and then I get scared that he somehow slipped out of the house. My biggest fear is that one of the kitties slips out of the house and we never find them again. Not knowing if they are dead, alive, hungry, cold… that would absolutely kill me. Obviously, he has never slipped out and we always find him. He loves to sleep in the linen closet on one of the shelves, so sometimes he is in there and we close the door on him and then can’t find him… duh.

Pets are fur babies after all, so I understand completely! One time our cat climbed up on a hanging wine rack, and knocked it down. Glass was everywhere (broken wine glasses) and our cat was no where to be found. She hid up in a rafter in our basement and we couldn’t find her for almost a day!!! We were a bit freaked that she somehow got out of the house too.
A day!? I would not have been able to function until I found my kitty!

I thought the time he was racing me down that run at Keystone going 50+ mph on skis and we couldn’t find him was scarier! At least he couldn’t hit a tree going fast out in the hotel hallway.
OMG – that was terrifying too!!! I feared he was wrapped around a tree somewhere. And it was worse because I was on a chair lift and couldn’t go get him!! Thankfully he’s a ski pro and we didn’t need to worry. But still, shame on him for making us fret!!!
I do! I’ve never done anything dangerous- I’m usually wondering around looking for our dog. When we’ve gone on cruises my husband triple checks the lock on the balcony door and always positions himself between me and the door.

Way to be safe!! 🙂 Sleepwalking still amazes me that nothing is remembered!
Wow that is really scary! Glad everything worked out ok!

Thanks! I’m glad we had an upper floor. Who knows how far he could have headed if we were in the ground floor! Yikes!
Holy cow, I can only imagine how panicked you must have felt. I could feel your anxiety coming through the post even after the incident was over.
I had a similar experience a couple of years ago. I woke up and Cecil wasn’t laying in the bed or in his cat tree which is next to the bed. I walked to the kitchen to open his can of breakfast and he didn’t come running. That’s when I knew something was wrong. I looked all over and he wasn’t anywhere to be found. I woke Adam up in a panic, my heart had literally dropped down into my stomach. I walked out the front door into the hallway of our apartment complex and didn’t see him. I turned the corner and he was laying in a window sill in the hallway. I couldn’t breathe.
At that apartment complex the laundry room was down the hallway and Adam had done his laundry late at night. When he came back to the apartment Cecil must have ran out the front door and he didn’t notice. I can’t even bare to think about what would have happened if somehow he got into the stairwell or onto the elevator and made his way outside.
Now I can’t fall asleep unless I know exactly where he is (which luckily is usually right beside me)!

Oh wow, that is scary! So glad Cecil was close by!!
This makes me uncomfortable. I can’t imagine the fear you experienced. Also, sleep-walking is totally creepy to me. Several years ago I had a prescription for Ambien and I was too scared to take it! I was afraid that I’d eat sticks of butter and then drive myself to Speedway barefoot. I made my husband hide the car keys on nights when I did take it!

Butter eating is a real concern. hahaha! Actually those stories of people eating at night are pretty odd. Hopefully my son grows out of sleepwalking!
