It’s October. You know what that means? Fall races, Octoberfest beer, and homecoming! Well, if you have high school or jr high kids, homecoming is a big deal!
We have never really participated in our school district’s homecoming events until recent years when my kids are actually part of it. I’m glad we started attending – it’s a lot of fun! I might be biased because the whole event starts out with a parade, in which they throw candy. Yes, I do get some candy! I let the kids go for it first, but if any chocolate falls within my personal space of a foot of so, it’s all mine!! But seriously, there was oodles of candy. More than enough to go around.
The floats created by all of the student classes were all very good. This year the theme was “movie studios” – like Disney, Dreamworks, etc.
Then we got to see the homecoming king and queen crowned. My friend’s daughter was the queen last year, so it was fun to see someone I knew out on the field!
Next, our football team crushed the visiting team. Our football team is actually UNDEFEATED this year, and the final score of this game was 42 to 0. Same score as the previous week. Crushing it!
The halftime show was pretty impressive. The opposing team had a good marching band, but they also had an amazing baton twirler. (is that the name of that? maybe it’s majorette…) They had just one girl, but she put on a heck of a show. Juggling 3 batons at the same time! At one point she even slipped when she was trying to catch a throw (because it had rained earlier), but she just got right back up and had a huge smile on her face, chuckling at the slip. Very professional! Of course the choreography for our marching band was highly impressive, like usual. Just saying.
The next day was the homecoming dance. My daughter went with a group of friends. It was a big group of friends! Can you pick her out?
Yep, she’s the one in the maroon dress.
I was happy with all of the dresses the girls had picked out. I won’t get into it here, but after my experience shopping for a dress with her, I can confidently say that a large number of the dresses offered in the stores (and seen on my Facebook feed) should only be worn by adult women on a girl’s trip to Vegas. NOT high school girls. I’m hoping I won’t have to make a judgement call on a homecoming dress for Sydney in the near future, but so far the past 2 years dress choices have gone well 🙂
While Sydney was out having a good time with her friends, and partying the night away, I was in world domination mode and I beat Alan and Zach at Risk! Oh yeah!!

Q: Did you ever participate in the homecoming parade at your school?
I did help build the float for our class my senior year. That was about it.
Q: Do you know how to twirl a baton?
I do! I own one! I think they are pretty cool.
Q: Can you juggle?
I used to be able to, but I guess that’s a skill you need to practice because I can’t do it anymore!!
Yes I did pick Sydney out! Her dress is beautiful. I am very liberal in my feelings on clothes for adults, but when it comes to teenagers, I am a HUGE proponent of parental guidance and picking a dress in which the girl feels BEAUTIFUL and it is also age appropriate. Hopefully stores continue to offer options that are trendy and appropriate for young gals!
At my school, homecoming was not a huge deal. There was a football game, so of course I was there playing in the marching band. But I was never part of the homecoming court because I was not pretty or popular… I played the freaking clarinet in marching band and had bad skin, no boobs, and was basically a huge dork.
Megan @ Meg Go Run recently posted…Monday, monday, monday… MOOOOOONDAY!
Some of the dresses looked ok in the store, but the same dresses looked 10x worse on the models on their website. Yikes!!!!
Sydney’s dress was the only one which made her face light up when she saw it. I knew that was it!!
That game taught Zach and myself to not just attack each other while you quietly built up troops to eventually crush us!
