It’s race week for Race for the Cure!! I’m still training for the Columbus half on 10/20/19. Even though I haven’t been on this Pfitz half marathon training plan for the entire time, I jumped into it based on my race day and this ended up being a peak week. I wasn’t sure how I’d be feeling, but I think I survived OK. At least, until Sunday….
Miles run: 49 (!!)
Monday – 7 miles “GA”. With my new training plan I have a whole slew of new terms. GA run is General Aerobic, which I guess is just the “plain old run”. So, did it on my treadmill today and ran around 9:45 pace overall. Just a nice easy run, but not too easy, and not too hard. So yeah, just kind of random and I’m still trying to figure out what the paces will be! And on a fun note, I scored some nice shorts at Target for $8. Woot!

Evening run – 2.65 miles, fartleks. This is our last Monday meeting for the Ready for the Race group. We all wore our training shirts. We looked awesome. The run went well. #squadgoals

Tuesday – 11 miles “endurance”. One of the key points of the Pfitz training plan is a mid week “long run”. I remember these runs being up to 13 miles back on the marathon plan, but 11 miles for the half training plan?? Ok, I gave it a try. Got it all knocked out on my treadmill before work. Ironically the weather was *beautiful* outside this morning. I should have run half of this outside!!!

Wednesday – Rest day! I totally rested! Yeah me! It was the last night of training for our Ready for the Race group but I opted to cheer and take pictures instead of running 🙂
Thursday – 10 miles, VO2 max run. 2 miles warm up, 2 sets of 2 x 1200m, 1 x 800m and 2 miles cool down. It was supposed to be 5K pace for the intervals, but I wasn’t anywhere close to that. Oh well. It was a good effort and felt challenging. Good enough for me! My clothes matched my shoes too. Woohoo!

The river view from the path was very tranquil.

Friday – 4.5 recovery miles. I nailed this one! Zone 3 baby!! It was so chilly, I wore capris and long sleeve. What beautiful weather!

Saturday – 10 miles, long run. Back to humid weather. Whomp whomp. My plan called for 14 miles but I just didn’t have time for it. I had committed to be a sub coach for the Marathon in Training group and the venue changed, so I had to spend more time driving to the run. A had a strict time to leave because I had to go see my son perform in a parade, so 10 it was! This was a wonderful run because I was with a chatty group and the miles just clicked by. And we got lost. That’s what happens when you put a sub coach in charge of the group! haha!

When I was reviewing my run, I looked at the fly-bys on Strava and noticed my husband had run very close to me. We almost crossed paths, but we were going opposite directions! I had no idea he was so close by.

I made it to the parade on time… the band was good!

Sunday – Race for the Cure!!! I’ll share my race report later this week. The event was great and I ran with my coworker/friend. I was feeling stiff from all the miles this week, but once I got moving I felt good. But then about half way through the race I noticed a tightness in my right shin. After the race it was sore. 🙁 Will be icing the rest of the day.

Q: What day of the week is your favorite?
Thursdays! They always have been, but now that I work Mon-Weds, Thursdays are SUPER best days.
Q: Do you typically get to run long runs with a group, or do them solo?
Nice week of training! I had a friend who used Pfitzinger’s training plan with great success–too much mileage for my old body. Congrats on your race today. Anxious to hear more. I hope that shin calms down.
I’m starting to think it’s a lot of miles for my body too! I’m starting to think maybe that’s why I put it back on my shelf and was using other plans. ha!
Gotta say those pink shirts are the ((pink)) bomb 😉 Wow, that’s some serious mileage, go YOU!!! Glad you do so well on your treadmill…I wish I could swing a long run on it without losing my mind or patience or mojo. I’m kind of liking my Thursdays…those have the most variety with HIIT or speed work (and I try to switch it up each week).
Our training group shirts are really nice! It also made it easy to figure out who was part of our group. Learning everyone’s names is definitely a skill I need to improve on!
Awesome job on your workouts and mileage this week! Also, I love the shirts that you wore for today’s race!
I usually split up my long runs between some miles solo and some with the group. I like the mixture of both!
Thanks! The shirts last year were the same design but a softer pink color. I prefer this brighter color for sure.
Wow a great week of training for you! Those are new terms to me as well. Congrats to you and your crew. Love the coordination.
I swear the training plan is written in the most vague way possible. I like to think I’m skilled at figuring out a workout, but some of workouts are rather cryptic. I figure as long as I’m giving it my best try, it’s good enough!
Friday is my favorite day of the week. I’ve trained using the Hansons Marathon Method and it was tough but manageable. Don’t think I will do it again. Well..maybe. 🙂
I do all of my long runs by myself. It would be nice to run with a group but I don’t mind running solo.
Yep, I have the Hansons training book on my shelf too. It didn’t work for me! I’m looking forward to my next solo run – I’ve been listening to Crazy Rich Asians. The book is pulling me in!
I do all of my running solo, but I’ve got my eye on a few training groups and am thinking about joining in next spring for half training.
My favorite week day is Wednesday! When I started dating my husband, that was the only weeknight that we both had free, so it became a dedicated date night and we’ve kept that tradition to this day.
That’s funny – our date night is Thursday night! We also have pizza and beer and watch TV. When available, that’s the night we watch Survivor.
so much great mileage this week!! how funny you and your husband also had a fly-by without knowing it! Sometimes I have that with friends too, where I think “maybe that’s so-and-so” but they are too far away… only to have Strava confirm it haha!
my favorite day of the week is Friday. Because I am off on Fridays 🙂
i would love to run with a group but there are just no groups for me at the moment. well, I can’t run anyway right now but I’m not fast enough when I do run. once I get started again in three months I’ll have to build all that back up again. So, I’m pretty much a solo runner.
I often think a group run will inconvenience me based on the day or time it is happening but I never end up regretting it!
That was funny about the Strava fly by – I thought he was already at home!
Great week for you! And, 11 miles on the mill as a midweek run!?! Wow – you’re my hero! I swear I can barely make it for 5 or 6 miles without losing my mind.
I always think a movie will be a good distraction on the treadmill, but I end up losing interest after an hour. I think watching shorter shows works better for me. The more variety the better!
That’s a lot of running for a half training. I’ve never heard of a GA run either.
Most of my long runs lately are on my own, but even when I’m with the group I’m usually on my own anyway.
I’m reminded how running with a group training plan has it’s benefits – I really like someone explaining the workout, and telling me what pace I should run. No need to figure out what a GA run is!
Way to rock all those miles! How fun to run so close to your hubby and not even know it til later. Haha! I hope your shin pain is nothing serious. I well remember those Pfitz terms and that mid-week long run. It’s been many years since I followed a Pfitz plan though.
My shin ended up feeling better by the night (phew!). But now today (Tues) I’m having some weird hip pain. Ugh, it’s always something!
Love the race for the cure tops
I haven’t managed the mid-week long runs, but I’ve gotten to 5-6 most weeks which is huge for me. I seriously think we need eight day weeks.
Hope your shin doesn’t linger
5-6 days a week of running is a big deal! Good for you! My shin is feeling better now, thanks! Hopefully is was just a fluke kind of thing.
I love all your group in their matching tops!
I often do 10-13 miles with a friend or two, over that and it’s usually a sequence of a few different people!
Splitting a long run up with a few people is a fun way to get it done. You get to chat with everyone!
You had a great week of training and I hope your right shin is feeling better by now.
I guess Fridays are my favorite day of the week, but Thursdays aren’t too shabby since I usually only work a half day on Fridays.
