Coming to a home near you this week – COVID 19! Up until about a month ago I could say I only knew of people on the internet who had Covid 19. But this week, the virus moved closer. Friends I had met up with. People we had been in contact with. And potentially a case or two in our house!
Good news, bad news this week. Good news? I’ve decided to take the coaching gig up a notch for spring training. I’m going to be a full time coach for the Dave’s Running Shop training program (aka Spring MIT, “marathon in training”). We will be training for the Glass City Marathon on 4/25/2021. My group will be the 9:30-10:00 pace group and will be a mix of full marathoners and half marathoners. I’m excited to take on this challenge! I’ve only coached the shorter 5K training plans in the past, and of course filled in a sub for several years now, so this is a bit next level. Woot!
Bad news #1? Our school system decided to go to remote learning based on the COVID numbers here in town. It starts next week and will continue until January. A lot of kids are quarantining, but I think more of an issue is that the school system needs substitute teachers and bus drivers to fill in for staff who are quarantining. I really hope we get it all under control by the time January rolls around and we can get back to at least hybrid schedule again 🙁
Bad news #2? My daughter came home from school with a high temperature on Friday, following a headache in the morning, and followed by chills and aches Friday evening. We promptly isolated her. After talking to the school “Covid officer”, he said he’s seen a lot of cases like that lately, so we are acting as if she has it and following the quarantine/isolation rules. Who knows, could just be a bug, but I’m not taking any chances. She’s had high temps for two days now and a sore throat. Otherwise she is in good spirits and moving around just fine [in her room]. We are going for a test on Monday.
But here’s what else happened this week…. 20 miles running, 30 miles biking.
Mon – Strength training. I found a YouTube channel that I really like.
Tues – 40 mins elliptical. I received some fun mail today from Athleta… clearance tank top and new tights. Ironically I saw the EXACT same tank top being worn on an episode of House Hunters on TV tonight! What are the odds??
Weds – Strength training. I was going to do elliptical this morning, but decided to snooze instead. Also, had an early morning meeting so I had to be on time! We had a guest appearance from my daughter on this workout. Fun!!
We had a date night before Ohio shuts down. A new microbrewery!
Thurs – 8 miles. I was hoping running would be all butterflies and rainbows after resting post race, but you know what? It sucked! I felt like I was crippled. WTF? But never judge a run based on the first mile, so I decided to go a little longer. Then the weather was so nice I just kept running! I saw a lot of fun animals. I also completely failed at dressing. It was about 40 when I started and I wanted to try out my new Athleta Rainier tights. They didn’t look very warm, but reviews said otherwise. To my surprise it felt like I was wearing snow pants and I had to make it a sports bra run. Even then I was hot!! So I guess that means they will be good for colder temps!
43 free drinks still left? Starbucks gave their Visa cardholders 400 stars this week as a gift! So, two+ more free drinks got added to my account! I’m going to be bummed when I get down to only a few more drinks left! This week was Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino.
Fri – 4 miles running, strength workout at the gym. Ironically, I posted this morning on Instagram that I was happy we were all healthy in my house?? DOH. Watch what you say, right? 😩
We also decided the weather was too beautiful to pass up (61 degrees!!), so we went on a 30 mile bike ride. The wind was really strong so we crawled out 15 miles, and flew back home on the tailwind. I even hit 28 mph! Woah!!
Sat – 3.1 miles running. We had planned to do a fun 5K run as a family, but due to the current quarantine situation, that was not happening. I did get to run with my son though. We had fun sharing my new cheapy “not airpods” as we ran. He got one earbud and I took the other. Paired them to my Garmin. Technology rocks!!
Sun – 5 miles, treadmill. I woke to some snow this morning! I didn’t want to push it, so I decided I would try the treadmill and if that didn’t feel good I’d switch to elliptical. Luckily everything felt OK and I ran 5 miles. Got to finish up my new favorite Netflix show, Emily in Paris. It’s a great show! I also did a full set of my PT exercises (yep, jumping back on the PT bandwagon *again*), and even did a Peloton core workout. Then enjoyed the delicious coffee cake I made with my son. Yummmm.
My daughter’s temperature has gone down a bit, so I’m hoping this will be mild symptoms if it is Covid. My husband is feeling a little off, so he’s sending himself to the basement for the rest of the day. Looks like we will be having a very chill week of Thanksgiving for sure! So stay safe out there – you just never where that sneaky Covid is lurking!!!

Q: How’s your week been? Any good news or bad news??
Oh no, I hope your daughter feels better quickly and that your husband isn’t coming down with it (if that is what your daughter has…).
Hope you have the best Thanksgiving possible!

Thanks! I didn’t realize how hard it was to get an appointment for a test, and also how it takes so long for results (around 4-5 days here)! Fingers crossed we don’t all catch it.
Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope everyone feels better quickly and that no one else gets sick. It really is everywhere now. We aren’t seeing anyone for Thanksgiving because it’s just too risky.
I’m thankful we didn’t have any travel plans, and I did have to cancel having my parents over for Thanksgiving. Even before this sickness it really was just too risky. You just never know!
Here’s hoping your daughter and hubby (as well as your entire household!) feels better. The COVID is a sneaky little _!tch, just saying. We’re making all the food for Thanksgiving, but not sure how many will be joining us. We definitely will not all be gathered around the same table and are doing a ZOOM-themed pic for our holiday cards 😉
I do have to laugh sometimes how my blog ends up painting the “full picture” after the fact. Remember those three pictures of me with my friend last week? Yep, she’s sick 🙁 but who knows where my daughter got it from. Did I get it from my friend? Did I give it to my friend? Am I asymptomatic? This stuff is just crazy.
I could share all kinds of stories with you from work–people are certainly interesting in how they assess their risk for COVID! And I am constantly reminding the adults to pull up their masks over their noses. They may be uncomfortable but sadly for me, they are only one of the many people I see during the day who are putting me and my staff at risk. I don’t want COVID and I sure hope it isn’t what your daughter has! Hang in there.
Thank you for all of the service you do for your community! It would be very frustrating dealing with the virus. I’ve sure learned a lot about what to do and quarantine/isolating!
Hope your daughter is feeling better and that the rest of you don’t get it as well. My daughter had it a few weeks ago and has now recovered. It’s crazy out there for sure. Be safe! Congrats on the coaching gig
Sad to see pretty much everyone knows someone in the family or close friends that have had it now. But it is good that it seems the symptoms are much less than what I originally heard. Well, of course that might be because I mostly know runners and they are in good health.
Congrats on the coaching gig! I’m sure that will be very exciting. My mom works for a school here and she has mentioned the same thing – tons of kids quarantining, which means teachers have to as well since they come in contact with the kids. They can barely find subs for the classes. She thinks they will end up going remote soon as well.
I’m so sorry to hear that your daughter isn’t feeling well 🙁 Glad to read that her temperature has gone down. Hopefully she is on the road to recovery.
Even though I dislike it, I think the answer is to be remote right now. Too many kids missing out of classes. Such a bummer.
Oh man, fingers crossed that everyone rebounds soon. There are a few schools around here that are shutting down, not by mandate but because they simply don’t have enough staff due to illness/quarantine.
Congrats on your new coaching gig! 2021 is a year to look forward to for sure.

Thanks! I am looking forward to the coaching gig!
I hope your daughter feels better. Wow…it really is close to home and everyone..Exponential spread. Insane how quickly it feels like it exploded, right when it got cold again. Hope you are able to avoid it. I’m surprised testing is that hard? Here, we have free testing at the convention center and you get results in 24 hours. Our governor essentially is telling everyone ages 19-35 to get tested just to be sure.
On a brighter note, congratulations on the coaching gig! Sounds like a fun opportunity!
Oh wow, that’s interesting about the testing availability! They did have a pop-up testing center last week but we missed it. It was really busy. They don’t have as many rapid tests available, so we have to wait 3-5 days. But by that time you’re already a week past your symptoms appearing. The tests don’t seem to be really reliable either. Just best to quarantine for 14 days it seems!
Wow! Sounds like your daughter is bouncing back quickly so that is good news but I hope it isn’t the virus. I have had close contact with a couple of runners who tested positive but so far I have dodged the bullet. There is a testing facility in the Boulder County fairgrounds about a mile from my house. Just drive up in your car for free testing whether you have symptoms or not. Up until yesterday I was still running in shorts but had to break out the tights today. Hope they start rolling out the vaccines before the end of the year.
That’s a good option for testing. We just missed a pop up center around us. Yes, lucky her symptoms haven’t been too bad. I hope we don’t lose our taste before the holiday eating begins! Haha
So so sorry about your daughter. I hope she’s feeling better soon, & that it doesn’t spread to you & your son (and that your husband will be ok). Times are just scary. 🙁
But congrats on your expanded coaching! So exciting!
I am excited about the coaching gig! It’s a big commitment, but it will be fun and rewarding.
I hope your daughter continues to feel better, and the rest of your family stays healthy. Covid seems so unpredictable! I have a friend quarantining because a co-worker of hers tested positive—she’s hoping a negative test will clear her, but by the time she gets the results her 14 days could be up anyway!
Wow on the snow. We probably won’t see any until January.
Exactly- by the time you get a test, then get results, it’s a long time. I’m a bit afraid of getting that swab up my nose, so maybe I’d just quarantine 😬 But it is good to be sure (well, as sure as those tests are. Still questionable in my opinion).
Oh gosh, so sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope your husband is OK too.
It bothers me that it takes so long to get results. When I went in August it took 2 days but some places you have to wait longer than that.
Congrats on the coaching gig!

I really don’t know what is going on with my husband. I know COVID has many different symptoms, but he might just be sick with something else? It’s hard to know! We are not having the best week around here 🙁
Your poor daughter! and poor you! Even though she’s not feeling well, I’m glad she’s in good spirits. Hopefully, it’s just a quick bug and not COVID.
Our schools are still open, and our numbers seem to be steady. Again, we are in virtual school so we don’t have to deal with it, but it’s still nerve-wracking.
We get emails from the school when there are positive test results for COVID and I swear we get one every day now! It is spreading pretty fast around here. Hope you stay safe down there!
Thanks for that intense arm workout YouTube suggestion. I did it this morning and it was good (and hard). And ending on a 2-minute plank… ouch – lol. I (mostly) did it though (with one short break). Good burn!! Happy Thanksgiving and I hope you all get/stay well at this point.
I really like her videos. I like that her workouts don’t have many repeating moves. Glad you enjoyed it!
Hope you’ve got the test sorted by now – very hard to get here, too. Don’t be fooled by people who are healthy not getting it too badly though, one of my fittest friends almost ended up in hospital with Covid …
It really is hard to tell how COVID will affect people. So many different symptoms too! We are still waiting on the test results. Hopefully we hear soon!
