This week we went to the Fall Officers Bash, which is the Fall event for our local Toledo Roadrunners Club. The TRRC is a great value for our running family. They host several free and cheap 5K’s for members, have monthly newsletters, discounts on bigger races, and have a great Fall meeting which is 50% running and 50% social get together! It’s their monthly meeting, but also a 5K with dinner. Yep, all of that for only $8 for our whole family to attend! I like deals 🙂
The 5K was also Sydney’s first opportunity to test out her XC training at a 5K. She hasn’t raced one since summer I think. The first time she ran this course it was measured incorrectly and it ended up being 3.62 miles. Oops. Kinda funny something like that would happen at a running club’s race! It wasn’t quite so humorous for my daughter who was only 8 years old at the time. Her pace was 10:53 a mile. This year, she had a smoking fast pace of 7:37 a mile, for 23:43! Glad I wasn’t her running buddy because I would not have been able to keep up with that pace!
Zachary was my running buddy and he also has run this course before, with around a 28:00 finish time as his previous best time. This year he finished in 26:03!! He didn’t even complain once during the race. I was impressed! At mile 3 he told he was going to sprint to the finish. I let him go. No way I’m sprinting fast and hurting myself before the race on Sunday! You GO kid!!
We ended the night with pizza, lasagne, salad, beer (for the adults!) and lots of cookies.
I was quite surprised when they told us the kids got a fleece jacket for running that night. Nice!! They also got tech shirts for winning in their age group, and the adults got socks. Socks are always a great gift for runners!
I’m spending the rest of my day getting ready for my trip to Columbus tomorrow for the marathon (it’s the half for me!). First, a quick trip to the church rummage sale to find some throw away clothes for the race!! It’s supposed to be a chilly morning we need to layer up. I got a sweatshirt and a hat. I’ll be styling 🙂 Hmmm, now that I look at my picture I see some soccer cleats I could have needed too! And what about those snow boots… So much stuff, so little time to shop.

Q: Are you a member of a running club?
Q: Do you ever run with your friends at races or pace anyone?
Q: Best post race food – pizza or lasagne? Or just beer and cookies?
Q: Are you a thrift store / garage sale/ bargain hunter?
I just love finding deals. No better deal than a 50 cent shirt!!
I am a member of CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association) which is one of the biggest running clubs in the USA after maybe the NYRR. I am also a member of the Glen Ellyn Runners which is much much smaller with only 250 members. I have paced a few people in at the end of a marathon but I have never had much success running with friends during a race. We seem to always lose each other after the first few miles. Immediately after a marathon, Gatorade and a banana are enough, but, later, I treat myself to big fat cheeseburger and fries.
I think we have a little over 1,000 runners in TRRC, so it’s a good size. Usually just a core group that we see repeatedly at functions though.
I am certainly looking forward to a big burger and beer post race already!!
I don’t know why I was thinking you had a 1/2 marathon coming up but it is a freaking MARATHON!!! I’m sending you lots of positive running vibes and I hope you have a great race! 🙂
Oh sorry, I have used that term too liberally. I am running the half, not the full 🙂 My husband is running the full, so I just call it that. But I will take all the good vibes! Thanks!!
Good luck on your race!!!!!!! Not too much longer! You will rock it!!!!
Love the idea of going to a thrift store to buy “throw away clothes.” Great idea! I so will be doing this!!!
Pizza or lasagna? Oh goodness, I love them BOTH!!!!! And with beer! LOL! 🙂
I have never paced or been paced by a friend in a race, normally, once at the starting line, everyone does their own thing……
I did have both lasagne and pizza.. gotta carb load! 😉
I would love to pace a half with a friend. Still waiting for someone to ask me!!
Good luck for your race Lisa! I’m sure you’ll crush it!! I am the hugest thrift store shopper, 90% of my things come from there 🙂
Thanks, I’m hoping it goes well!! I ended up going back to the sale and found two pair of corduroy pants for 50 cents each that fit really well. Deal of the day!
Your kids are smoking fast!!! That is awesome. They had some great races this weekend!!!
Yes, I was very proud to see them so happy with their accomplishments. Especially the smugness of my daughter being faster than me 🙂 It’s all good!
