Ah Zermatt! Home of the Matterhorn! Ok, I’m not sure if that’s what it’s called, but wow, when you get a look at the Matterhorn it’s stunning! On our ski trip in March 2026 we took a day trip to Zermatt. We had a rental car and the drive was quite easy between Nendaz and Zermatt. I thought it was quite interesting that even though we were still in Switzerland, the road signs changed along the route from French to German.

The town of Zermatt is a car-free village so we parked at the Tasch train station. The parking garage was very impressive. So clean! I love the technology here. Green spaces are available.

The train was easy to use and cost 17.20 Swiss Francs for a round trip. It’s only a quick 12 minute train ride to Zermatt and the trains run every 30 mins.

Zermatt has a lot of high end designer stores. Even though it’s a ski town, there is a lot of luxury brands and touristy shops. The town is small and very walkable. Even though there aren’t any cars, there are bright police cars.

The other vehicles are small trucks and cars which are electric. They sneak up on you, and you better watch out!

The first shop we decided to check out was Ogier. I had not heard of the brand but sure enough it was crazy expensive. 29,000 CHF for a chinchilla jacket and 1,900 CHF for a flannel shirt!! Oh my.

We headed to the far end of town and then we saw it… the Matterhorn! I think the day was perfect for viewing it too. A dramatic cloud hovered around it for most of the day.

We went on a hike towards the Matterhorn. We couldn’t stop taking pictures of it! It was beautiful.

Back in Zermatt we took a tour around the historical area. The buildings were built between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Another highlight of the city is the Mountaineers’ Cemetery. The graves are from many climbers who have lost their lives on the Matterhorn. As a mom of a climber, it was a reminder of how serious and dangerous the sport is!

After exploring more of the expensive shops, and drooling over the chocolates in the Lindt store, it was time to head back to Nendaz. But not without some more beautiful drone photography!

I’m so glad we went to Zermatt. It was so beautiful! The perfect way to enjoy a rest day from skiing.
