Week 3 of training is done for the Glass City Marathon.  It was a week of ups and downs, but luckily ended on UP. The miles snuck up on me… I ran 34 this week!

I know we often say what a great community our running friends are, and it’s so true!  Last week I had mentioned about wanting a foot pod to get more accurate indoor runs. Mostly for indoor track, but also on my treadmill for fun.  I’m part of the Northwest Ohio Moms/She Runs This Town group and I asked on Facebook if anyone uses foot pods and how they worked. I also asked if anyone had one they’d like to sell.  You just never know! Well sure enough a friend replied that I could have hers for free because she no longer had a use for it. What?? Wow! This friend also happens to be my former physical therapist.  She switched jobs and now works more directly with women’s health, like pelvic floor issues so I haven’t seen her for awhile. She’s an all around good person. Clearly! (Shout out to Alisha Bruhl! Thanks!)

Monday – 7.5 miles… 6 easy miles in the AM, treadmill and 1.5 miles in the afternoon.  Easy miles on my treadmill this morning. I could have run outside, but you know, it looked a bit cold, gloomy and windy, so I gave it the big “nah” and just stayed indoors 🙂  Later in the day I got outside though. And brrrrr, it was cold! I got the foot pod and figured it needed some outdoor running to calibrate it? I’m really not sure how it works yet.

Tuesday – 5 miles, fartleks, treadmill.  I tested out the foot pod as I ran today.  Although it wasn’t accurate yet, it was much closer than just my watch.  4.6 miles instead of 5. That made my paces slower than my goal paces, but so far a good first test with potential.  The workout was for fartleks, 3 mins on, 1 min off. I wasn’t very speedy, but got a good workout in.

Wednesday – Rest day!  Last week I mentioned that my daughter’s braces came off.  Here’s a before and after shot. Hooray for orthodontics!!!!  Amazing work.

Thursday – 6 miserable miles.  Since my work schedule was a bit off this week, I ran this “tempo” day run on the treadmill.  It was supposed to be about 6.5 miles, with 1 mile warm up, 5 miles at race pace, and then a short cool down.  I made it through about 2 miles at sub-race pace. Yikes. For some reason I had super tight hamstrings (like the kind where you can’t touch your toes for fear of ripping something).  This quickly turned into “the best I can do today”. Probably the worst run I’ve had in a really long time! Whomp whomp.

Friday – 5 rainy miles.  I actually decided to run outside, in the dark, in the rain!  Who am I?

I did make the mistake of wearing new tights that are supposed to be Lululemon knock offs, and they were not warm enough.  My legs were frozen by the end of the run! Red thighs for an hour! I don’t actually own any Lulu tights, but they were super comfortable so that was great.  Other than that, I didn’t mind the cold rain one bit.

DOMS DOMS DOMS! We went out for dinner.  Went so early it was happy hour. Woot!! But by the time dinner was over I could barely walk!  I told Alan “I feel like I went to step class!!”. And then it dawned on me. I did “step ups” for my PT work yesterday!!  Holy moly, my aching quads!! I cringed at every stair I had to walk down. I was following my PT guide the best I could. The picture showed the person doing this exercise by stepping up on a weight bench. I used a tub ledge that was knee high. I’m guessing that was my mistake. #toomuchforme

Saturday – 10.5 miles, long run.  I debated just skipping this run due to the pain I was still feeling as I walked down my stairs at 3:30am to feed my cat, but I decided to give it a try.  I’m so glad I did!! This was actually a GOOD run. I didn’t care about my heart rate at all and just ran. I was pleasantly surprised to see 9:20ish for my miles and I was fastest on my last miles.  Woohoo!

Sunday – 30 mins elliptical. Hey guess what? My quads are still sore from Thursday’s step ups. Shaking my head. We will be celebrating my Mom’s birthday today. She’s 80! I still can’t believe it. I thought she was 70 🙂

Q: If you had braces, do you still wear your retainer at night?

I wear a mouth guard for teeth grinding and I think that keeps my teeth in position.

Q: Are you part of a Moms/She Run this Town group in your area?

    1. I know – what great luck that free foot pod was! Apparently she used it with a former watch which met its demise with a lawn mower, thanks to her toddler. (!!) She had just found it earlier in the week after not seeing it for awhile. Very nice of her. If you bought one, would you be able to find a new one? I’m not sure – although Ebay “new to me” is my favorite 🙂

  1. I have a Milestone Pod that was a gift from a few years ago. It’s still in the box. I’ll be curious to hear the final verdict on it. Or I could sell it..

Your daughter looks beautiful! The miracle of braces. I don’t understand parents who won’t get them for their kids. Funny story, my youngest kept leaving his retainer out of the box and it would promptly be eaten by the dog. After the third time, I made him pay for them and it never happened again.

    1. The braces were pretty expensive so that could be a hinderance for some cases, but otherwise, it’s really an investment in the rest of their lives. Luckily we have no dog, but she was warned about them! We’ve already put the fear into her about the retainer, telling her the first one was included. Round 2 is paid by her!

  2. Your daughter looks beautiful 🙂 (Not that you need reminding) No braces for me as a kid, but I just finished my Invisalign treatment. It only took seven months, and I have a retainer for now for “stabilization.” I was amazed at how quick and painless the entire process has been. I tried running (on the ‘mill) recently using my Koala Clip for my phone…and it had my mileage really screwed up. I ran five (somewhat) miserable miles and it only gave me credit for 3.3…say WHAT????

    1. I think the 3.3 miles for 5 miles is about what my watch will do on it’s own. Not so great! Invisalign is such a great option. 7 months is speedy!! I think Sydney looks years older now that she had the braces off. I wasn’t expecting that!

  3. Your daughter’s smile is beautiful! I did Invisalign last year and now I sleep with a retainer at night. I am so happy with the results!

  4. Great week! Awesome job on the long run..and getting out there in rain! I had super sore quads this week as well for my long run which made it challenging for sure. Way to go!

    1. It’s comical that I had no clue why I was so sore! It really didn’t seem like that big of deal when I did the exercises. I’m not sure if I will try those again….

  5. MY MRTT/SRTT group is the best! We actually started a new chapter in my area since a lot of us wanted to run closer to home and when we all moved to the area there were two chapters but they were about 20-30 minute drives for most of us. Since starting the chapter in 2018 it has grown so big and we’ve become super close! It’s amazing! Such a great community of women.

I’ve never tried a foot pod but I’m sure after calibrating and running with it a few times it’ll be good for you.

    1. I joined our MRTT group about 5 years ago. Our has really grown too! Even if I don’t meet up with them very frequently any more, our Facebook group is a great place to rant/chat or discuss TMI topics with no shame!! Love it.

  6. So glad you got your hands on a foot pod and for free too! What a lovely gesture by your friend!

What a beautiful daughter you have! I had braces as a 14 year old! At that age, it’s such a boost to one’s self-confidence and as a teenager one less thing to worry about.

    1. It’s funny how we dreaded braces when I was kid, and now it’s the “cool thing” to get them! I guess that just show how much the process and technology has improved. I’m so glad my kids haven’t had to wear headgear like I did. That was freaking torture!!!

  7. Your daughter’s teeth look great! And glad you have that lovely community of runners. I have my sub-group of running club, the “sedate ladies” and there’s always someone to run with or ask questions of (or provide motivation for as I’m one of the more experienced ones).

I just had to go back and add a bit to my update as I forgot the bit where my furry friend used her perfect teeth to devastating effect!

    1. It’s funny that dogs like to eat retainers, isn’t it? I wonder how many retainers get thrown in the school garbage at lunch time every year. I’m sure it’s a lot!

  8. Oh that beer looks divine! I can’t drink with the meds I’m on and now all I want is a beer lol!

Sorry about your awful Thursday run. And your DOMS. Neither of those are fun to experience.

Happy birthday to you mom! <3

I actually have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth. i should probably get a mouthguard because I have TMJ and clench my jaw, but it just hasn't been a priority for me.

    1. Hopefully you will be able to get that beer soon!! I didn’t even realize that I was grinding my teeth at night, but my gums were receding. Which lead to gum grafting to help out the coverage. Which is a horrible surgery!! And I had it twice (once on each side) 🙁 Luckily the results were very good.

  9. Definitely sounds like some up & downs, but you ended on a high note so that’s what counts, right? I used a foot pod way back when I started to train for my first half — that was not accurate, but it was a long time ago.

My watch isn’t actually too far from my treadmill. Not perfect, but I’m ok with that.

    Happy birthday to your mom!

    1. Oh yes, I’ve run Glass City for about a million times now! OK, maybe closer to 6 times? I’ve done the half, full, and part of a relay time. You just can’t beat a home town race!

    1. I am really waffling with my training plan right now and if I want to run another marathon right now! Might be some changes going down in the next few weeks. Lingering injuries seem to be not wanting to leave any time soon! ugh

  10. Your daughter’s smile is lovely! Both of my boys had to get braces. My oldest got his off a year ago and is still wearing a retainer at night, and my youngest is hoping to be out of his by this summer. Such a process!

Nice log run! Glad the DOMS didn’t spoil your run 🙂

  11. I also got a foot pod and have been using it at the gym. Of course it isn’t accurate according to what it shows on the treadmill. I don’t care. I go by what my watch says. 🙂 I had the metal type braces when i was in high school. Glasses too so that was no fun! I also wear a night guard because I grind my teeth.
