Although it wasn’t a big race for me, it was for my family members. I ran the 5K at our local race and my husband, daughter and her boyfriend ran the Churchill’s half marathon! We also had a friend staying with us so it was an extra social week for me. My body was a bit of wreck this week, but surprised me on race day. The weather was crazy. Still not time to put the shorts and tank tops away.
Mon – 3.5 miles running. Something seemed a bit off with my hip today. Later on at work, lower back muscles were tight. Oh man, not good.

Tues – 3 miles running. Ok, now things are feeling worse! I know it’s a “kinetic chain” situation. Everything is focused on the left side (as always). One thing isn’t working and it erupts all the way down. Now I’ve got odd aches on the left side by my knee. Ugh. I cut my run short and found a video of hip stretches followed by some hip strengthening exercises. Clearly I have not been doing any functional exercises and it shows. Feeling oh so janky today.
It was so nice outside – I got to enjoy the morning on the patio working from home. Waiting for the leaves to just blow out of my yard. haha!

Weds – Rest day. A super fun night – bunco! We had two guest players tonight. They were players back in the old days. I haven’t seen one of these ladies since she moved away 12 years ago! I was a BIG winner too. Rolling in the cash! woohoo!

Thurs – .4 miles running, 30 mins elliptical. Today’s workout: “I tried”. I wanted to see how the leg/hip/glute situation was, and sadly, it was not good! I ended this run very short. Luckily the elliptical didn’t bother me so that was the workout for the day! It’s nice to have indoor options. So glad I am not running the half.
Fri – Rest day. Fingers crossed things are calming down with my legs. I feel like a storm is brewing and something bad is on the horizon. But maybe I’ve caught it in enough time. I worked packet pickup for the upcoming race. Fun to see all the runners!

I made a delicious lasagna and we had a pre-race pasta dinner.
Sat – Race day!! Today started very early with my job at packet pickup (6:15 am!), but first, putting up some signs to cheer on my runners! The half marathon runners made their way to the start line, which was a bus ride away across town. This is a point to point race for them, but for us 5K runners we got to start and finish in the same area. Given the odd pains I have had this week I was a bit unsure how this race would go, or if I should even be running! I visited the PT at the race and she did a great job of stretching my back and correcting some hip imbalance I had. What a great resource to have!

My race actually went quite well! I did have some glute pain for the first mile, but nothing really alarming after that. First mile was on flat land: 8:35, 2nd mile went on an overpass: 8:48, 3rd mile on a shorter bridge: 8:41 and a sprint to the finish: 8:06 pace. 27:14 finish time, which earned me a 2nd in my age group. Yay!! I even got a medal as my award. Gotta love the “5K winner” on the ribbon 😉

After the 5K I headed over to the half marathon course to cheer the runners on. Everyone looked strong!

And then, back to the finish line! Of course we all celebrated in the party tent afterwards. This was my daughter’s 3rd half marathon, and her boyfriend’s first. Despite an inconsistent training plan (thanks to college, working 2 jobs and getting covid recently!) he did great!! 2:08 finish. He’s not even a runner! I guess she is persuasive 😊 My husband had a very good race and so did our out of town guest. A great race day all around!

I did visit the PT tent again after the race. I’m so glad I did because I got some direction (tips and exercises). Not too surprising, my soreness lately is most likely related to my weakness in hips/glutes/core [take your pick, they can all use strengthening!]. I will get back to work on these areas!
Sun – 30 mins elliptical, strength & stretching Started the day with a little cardio and then getting my stretching and exercises done. Getting my gold star today 🙂 It’s raining which is perfect for getting all of my indoor tasks done. It will be a productive day!

Great job on finishing the race uninjured!
Thank you 🙂 and congrats again on your great race!
Your week was kind of like mine- I was worried about some aches and pains, but then was able to run a good race on Saturday. Congrats on you race and AG finish! And congrats to everyone who ran the half! i hope your hip/glute situation is okay this week. Sounds like you got some great advice.
I just got my new list of PT exercises and I’m ready to get at it! My PT office uses an app and they were able to just adjust my list of exercises which show up in my app on my phone. How easy is that??
Congrats to your daughter, her boyfriend, your husband, and friend on their half; and to you on running your 5K without much of the pain you’d been experiencing.
It was a really good race day. I’m especially glad my daughter’s boyfriend had a good race. I wasn’t sure he was even going to be able to run based on being sick recently but he really surprised me!
Oh OUCH on the injury/aches. I hope it’s short-lived. I miss BUNCO!!! I used to be in a group, several years ago, and it died when several of the members moved away and we depleted our sub list. I think I still have the “kit,” maybe I need o start a local group (?)…in my free time, of course, LOL.
I was the keeper of the bunco box and I was sick of seeing it sitting around my house! I hope we can keep up some regular games. Of course it’s easier to find people to play than it is to host! 🙂 It is so fun to get together!
Congrats on the AG award and being an awesome cheerleader.
Hope the odds pains disappear.
I guess I just couldn’t keep going without some maintenance work (strength!) so my body is letting me know it’s time to get back at it. I am getting the message loud and clear! It’s so weird how aches pop up in different places but they are probably all related to something else.
Congrats on the strong finish and AG award! Yep, gotta do those fundamentals now! I started getting injured all the time in my late 40s/early 50s and that’s when I started working with the trainer, who focused on glutes, hips, and core. Sound familiar? Made a world of difference and I even PRd the half and marathon distance after that. You got this.
Our friend is 10 years old than us and we thought it was interesting how much additional “stuff” he needed to do to prep for the race. Specific routine of hydration, food, stretching, massage gun and more. If nothing else it has made us more aware of how we probably should get into the habit of doing at least some of these things! A strong body is a happy body!
Congrats on your 5K! Spectating is also fun. Congrats to your crew on their race!
I saw a lot of runners I knew. So fun! I’m glad it was a successful day all around!
Nice job on the 5k AG award!! Glad the PT was able to work on you during the race — what a great resource indeed. How amazing for your daughter’s bf to just go run a 2:08!
Oh, and the BF also made a port a potty stop! He might need to consider running as his new sport 🙂
How fun for your family! I love that you were all able to run, even if it was different distances!
And I’m also super glad you were able to get some tips on your pains. I hope it helps you going forward!
We did have a good race day and weekend. It was nice to play hostess for our guest!
I am thankful for the great PT resources I have. Now to put that info to good use!
Sounds like such a fun family race day!
