There was not a lot of exercise happening in my world this week. I took my recovery from the Columbus Marathon seriously! If you haven’t seen my race recap yet, head over here… I promise it’s a good one! I am still riding the high from that race and honestly in shock that it went so well. Did that really happen??
Mon – post race pains be hitting me hard today! Sunday after the race I was feeling quite good. This morning I felt like a truck ran me over. Sore quads and legs were the usual suspects. A little movement and Ibuprofen kept me going today. Alan and I had our traditional celebratory lunch and drinks.

Tues – quads still sore, a short neighborhood walk again got my legs going. I went to the gym for upper body workout and to use the hydromassage beds. Ahhhhh

Now that my training is on hiatus I am taking advantage of being social and seeing friends! Dinner and drinks with friends at a Cuban restaurant. Great food and interesting drinks. Mine was coffee based and was smoking. Yes, smoke! It reminded me of a campfire in a very good way.

Weds – Zoo day! I took my Mom to the zoo. We lucked out and the rain stopped while we were there. We saw something very fascinating – the giant octopus eating! His food is hidden inside a container. He was able to open up the container using his underneath suckers and then picked up the food. WOW. He also changed colors and textures as he ate, showing that he was mellow and happy. My legs were slightly sore, but I’m feeling about 90% better now.

Another social night for me. Dinner with friends.

Thurs – My legs are feeling all better today. At work the building was decorated for a Halloween party. I’m impressed at the creativity of some people! I’m a good copy cat, but not the one to come up with the original idea.

Today’s movement was walking around Cedar Point! We even got there before the park opened. Due to the questionable weather the park was not crowded at all. We also went through some of the scary walk through areas. One big bummer though – we sat in the front seat of Top Thrill 2. That ride reaches a top speed of 120 mph in 3.8 seconds… and when you are in the front row with nothing blocking the air, it’s SUPER FREAKING INTENSE!! Especially in the dark. The bummer part was that Alan’s ski jacket hood came unsnapped with the force of the ride and flew off. 🙁 We are hoping that it will be found by the workers but we haven’t heard back yet.

Fri – 20 mins elliptical. It was a work day and I woke up a little early so my daily Strava activity was elliptical in the morning.
One funny thing from this week was an interaction with my coworker. There is a guy in my office who thinks everyone runs 7 min miles, which we clearly don’t. When he finds out about races he always seems to be unimpressed since we didn’t win them (there are several runners in my office). Well this week he asked me how I placed in my age group and I proudly told him I was 4th out of 41! And, it was a NYC Marathon qualifying time! This genuinely impressed him, and I was happy to have finally shut him up. LOL!! (of course he did follow it up with “did you get to stand on a podium?” Really? smh)
Sat – 9.28 mile long run 🙂 My body decided this was a good amount of running, and I listened to it! The Churchill’s half marathon is coming up on November 8th. I haven’t signed up for it yet, but it’s a solid potential if I’m feeling completely recovered. It was a frosty morning. 34 degrees! Brrrrrrrr.

For Saturday night we met up with friends as a reward for getting tasks completed and yard work done. Always a great feeling to check off to-do list items!

Sun – Hoping to get out for a mountain bike ride today!
If anyone is keeping track… I cooked exactly zero dinners this week. oops. There’s still hope for Sunday!

Q: How far out do you plan your meals?
I used to be pretty good about planning for several weeks. Now I can’t even figure out what to eat the next day! Sad.

Somehow I missed your marathon recap – I’ll read it later today. Now that I can’t run them anymore, I love reading marathon recaps and living vicariously through others! Congrats on running such a great race!
We discovered smokey margaritas in South Dakota last summer. We were chilling at the hotel bar one evening and the bartender asked if I’d like for him to smoke my drink. OMG, it was so good! I’d planned to order a smoker for my bar at home, but just haven’t done it.
What a bummer about your husband’s hood flying off on the rollercoaster. Hopefully, a park employee will find it or you can order a replacement.
I typically just order a beer so a mixed drink was a splurge for me, especially one that was smoking! I’m glad we went to that place. I wasn’t sure what Cuban cuisine was, but as it turns out I really like it!
Glad to read you are taking your recovery very seriously. Your body will thank you for it! Looks like a fun week of social events. Your office has fun Halloween vibes!
I wish I would have taken a picture of the office spaces when they were completely decorated. They were over the top!! The company gave money to employees for supplies if you participated. It was very impressive!
LOL on that coworker — is he a runner? My son used to ask me if I won my races ….
I’ve got to read your recap, but huge congrats on doing so well!
He said he used to run triathalons, which must be where he is familiar with podiums, but now he said a 5K is the most he would even think of doing…. “running for 20 mins”. Ummmm sure, 20 mins? I’d like to see him do that. I’m sure he is in shape, but not 20 min 5K shape! Insert HUGE eyeroll here.
I was gonna ask if the race skeptic was a runner himself, LOL. Nice Halloween decorations at work! We got an email, two weeks ago, that we can dress0up on Thursday (since so many work remote on Fridays), but it has to be office-appropriate. I’m gonna wear my I Dream of Jeannie costume (with pink tights under the see-through genie pants, and a pink cami to cover my midriff). One time, I had a headband blow off my head on a speedy rollercoaster…and had scary hair for the test of the day.
I’m not sure if anyone dresses up in the office for Halloween. Maybe a spooky themed sweater? They do encourage one day of ugly sweaters at Christmas, but otherwise they used to be sticklers about dress code (“business” bankers). Your Jeannie outfit sounds like a good one!
I have lost a pair of sunglasses on a rollercoaster (well actually it was my son losing my Goodrs…) and one time my iPhone flew out of my pants pocket (thankfully we found it with no damage). Rollercoasters can be rough!!
First things first- I think that sentence should read “I cooked exactly zero dinners this week- hooray!” A week without cooking is a victory in my book.
Anyway I just read your race recap! i’m glad your coworker was finally impressed (I also have a friend who always asks me if I “won” my race- in this case it shows how little she knows about running). Any thoughts of running NYC?
Sounds like you recovered really well- and it sounds like you had a lot of fun this week, which is as it should be!
NYC is next on our radar! I have learned that even with a time qualifier the chances are not great that I’d make it in. I didn’t realize they had a cutoff time similar to Boston! So that would put Alan and myself both in the general lottery. Fingers crossed!
A good race needs a good recovery!
Ah the old “did you win?” running spectator! Everybody’s favorite.
My meal planning mojo has never been lower. I’m not quite sure how we seem to get fed every night. As soon as I stop working (at the end of this week!!!!!) I should be able to up my game.
Oddly enough I didn’t have any interest in running this past week! It is so exciting that you are retiring. I just read your post. Go you!!
I’ve never had a smoking drink but they always look so cool! I once went to the Toledo Zoo for work for an event, so it’s fun to say that I’ve been there before. Glad you seem to be recovering all right.
I lead a sheltered life. This was the first time I’d seen a smoking drink! haha The Toledo Zoo is a gem. It is such a great place. Fun fact: my family donated a huge snapping turtle to the zoo when I was a kid. He was more than we could take care of!
Good for you for taking your recovery so seriously and listening to your body! I couldn’t believe how funny I walked the day after the marathon LOL (but it happens to everyone – even the elites!).
I had to chuckle about the guy at your work not knowing what reasonable marathon paces (for non-elites) are but you surely shut him with your 4th place in your age group at the Columbus marathon. Good for you!!
After the marathon I was a little worried about going to my son’s apartment to change clothes because he’s on the 3rd floor!! So many stairs. Yes, my coworker is so annoying. He’s oblivious to the fact he’s clueless!
I like how you recover!! You sure didn’t sit still. Sounds and looks like it was a really fun week, and that’s how it should be!!
This past week was a lot of nights away from the house, but it was fun to see friends and go out. It was nice to sleep in and not need to get up early to run!
