One more week to go until the Columbus Marathon on October 19th. The workouts are done, the hay is in the barn. Nothing more to do other than hydrate, make healthy food choices (still working on that!) and bubble wrap to stay healthy!!

Mon – 7 miles, speedwork!  Well, I’m calling this speedwork because the group I ran with is faster than me.  It was a special group – I call it the Early Bird Retiree Run.  My husband joins his friends two or three times this week.  They are all retired and yet they meet at 5:30am.  I groaned about getting up at 5am to join them, but it really wasn’t too bad.  I didn’t even need a nap afterwards as I expected.  I joke that it’s my annual run with them, but maybe I’ll do it again sooner than that!

It was nice to be all done with both my run and my gym visit by 9am. It was a productive day!

I convinced my husband that we needed some ice cream after dinner because they will be closed for the season soon.  And I finally got a picture of the harvest moon, which I missed on my morning run.

Tues – 5 easy miles.  69 degrees felt quite sweaty with the high humidity!

My daughter convinced me to go get ice cream after dinner with her.  It wasn’t too hard to convince me!  Not surprising we were the only ones there. The funny thing was that we both ordered the same size but clearly one of us got a better value!

Weds – Rest day!  I took park walk on my lunch hour with my mom, 2.25 miles of walking.

Thurs – 6 miles, with some fartleks. Guess what?  It’s time for gloves and arm warmers!!  Quite a change from Tuesday! I wore knickers and my calves were red from the cold when I got home.  Brrr, only 45 degrees.

In the evening we went to the Toledo Zoo. They are having a Harvest Fest. Pretty stuff!

Fri – Rest day!  We went to Cedar Point in the afternoon and met up with some out of town friends.  So good to see them!  My daughter and her boyfriend were there too, so we hung out with them briefly.  The park was packed so we barely rode any rides but it’s fun to just check out the Halloween decorations.

Sat – 12 miles, long run.  I’d like to say this training cycle went out on a bang, but OOF, this run sucked.  Not sure why.  Could have been my later than usual start (9:30 am, late for me!), maybe I didn’t fuel properly, maybe my legs were tired from Cedar Point, or maybe it’s just cumulative fatigue!  Who knows.  By mile 10 I had an ache in my hip (hello, that’s something new!) and almost stopped my run at 11.85 miles but who does that?  I stopped immediately when I hit 12 miles and walked the last block to my house.  Whomp whomp.  A bad long run means a good race day though, right?  I’m sure that’s what we always tell our running friends to cheer them up 😉

Sun – Rest day!!

I didn’t mention last week that I failed on my daily stretching while camping, and lost my huge (for me) streak!  I think I was up to day 255 using my Bend app.  I knew I was going to lose my streak but I was honestly so over it I didn’t really care (it was bed time when I remembered it).  Getting a year subscription to the Bend app was an experiment for me to see if I felt better by doing daily stretches and see if I could make it a habit.  Did it help?  Well maybe!  I am feeling pretty good and I have had a trouble free marathon training cycle (except for Saturday maybe? I shouldn’t have said it out loud!).  But I’ll be honest, other than when I had a lot of free time after my running, I did NOT look forward to stretching every day.  It became such a chore and I was only doing a super short routine on a lot of days- only 4 minutes!!  As much as I should do it, it’s just not my jam. I did get back on the wagon though.  My subscription runs out in January so I’ll see if I can keep it up until then.

Q: Do you have a streak going?

I do have a Snapchat streak going with Alan. We’ve sent one to each other for 1,506 days!!! I am also doing a streak of a workout of some sort logged in Strava. I think I’ve had one every day since I started it in January.

  1. I have a Peloton streak of almost 5 years! Sometimes I slack on my daily or weekly core and stretch as well but it’s all good-just keep moving forward. Looks like a pretty good week of miles and family fun for you

    1. Luckily the app that I use for stretching didn’t even tell me what my longest streak was, so yep, moving on! It’s all for a good cause so if I miss a day or two that’s better than not doing it ever.

  2. Sounds like a fun and busy week! Enjoy your upcoming taper week and good luck at your marathon next weekend!

I have no streaks going currently. I used to have almost a year streak with Duolingo, but stopped that last October when we went on our trip to Vermont.

    1. I did have a bit of a streak in Duolingo before we went to Europe. I just couldn’t take when Duo cried when I didn’t do my daily work!! He is pretty cute.

  3. Every time I try a streak I get injured or at the very least seriously niggled! Having said that, after my foot injury last year I did daily heel raises for months (and in periods several types of heel raises too!) as part of my rehab program without troubles, and right now I’m trying a walking streak during October, so far I’ve only missed two days during the storm last week.
“Bubble wrap and stay healthy” is a perfect description! Hope all goes well for you and that the hip stays quiet!

    1. Same! Having a run streak has never been beneficial to me. I really thought I would grow to love, and miss, stretching. But nope, it just isn’t happening!

  4. Stretching can be such a challenge! It’s a bad excuse, but I seldom have sufficient time, since I’m usually in a hurry to get in the shower and off to work. I say this all the time, but I really to make it a priority. Easier said than done! Good luck with your marathon!!!!

  5. Hmmm. I don’t have any streaks. What does that say about me? That I don’t like the pressure? Lol

I have a feeling that despite your less than satisfactory long run, you’ll do great at your marathon! That’s my prediction!

    1. There sure is a lot of pressure in maintaining a streak! I remember back when my kids had Snapchat streaks with their friends and it was the end of the world if they didn’t send something when we were camping and out of cell service. But we made accommodations for them, and that’s why I still have one with Alan! Now my kids won’t even do Snapchat streaks with us. I guess that fad has passed!

  6. I have a long Peloton streak that I try hard to keep going! I’ve been pretty good at stretching after my runs and rides (usually 5 min) but am worse at stretching after outdoor rides and even worse when I’m traveling.

I hope your hip calms down and everything feels great next week!

  7. That’s funny, I also had a bad 12 mile run- except mine was SO bad, I stopped at 7.5. So at least you completed the whole distance! Who knows why these things happen- but you’ll be fine for your marathon. Sounds like a fun week, and I like all the fall activities! I’m not surprised you got ice cream, since you get cold Starbucks drinks on the coldest winter days.
    Good luck on your race!!!

    1. I hope to get some ice cream on the last day, after our marathon too 🙂 Maybe there was just something in the universe this week that made our long runs bad. Yep, positive thinking!!

  8. I don’t use Snapchat, but my husband and I do have a little TikTok streak going. One of us inevitably forgets or loses track of time, though and we have to restart.

I can’t believe one more week! That’s so exciting!

I also hate the idea that ice cream places close for the season! Our Rita’s custard shop does but every other ice cream place is open year round. And now I want ice cream.

  9. YES! A bad long run means a GREAT race day. Way to get in that full 12 miles!! One week – or less than that now! I have some friends running Columbus this weekend – hopefully the weather holds out!
