As I mentioned last week, my son is finally home from his job/adventures out West, so this was the week to monopolize his time and fit in all of our favorite summer activities into one week. How did we do?? All boxes were checked! Ice cream ✅ kayaking ✅ video games ✅ family time ✅ tacos ✅ rollerblading ✅ biking ✅ rock climbing ✅. As you can see, it was a busy and very fun week! I also had a successful week of workouts – 32 miles of running and 63 miles of cycling, a couple of misc activities and gym visits. 6 more weeks until the Berlin marathon… it’s coming quick!
Mon – 7 miles running. This was a big run because my overall pace was 9:49. What, a 9: is in my pace?? Long time no see! It’s amazing how great a drop in humidity and temps feel.
Tues – 4 miles running. The skies were quite eerie with the fog this morning. Note the shoes in the picture…. those are my new shoes for Berlin. Nothing flashy at all, and they are actually a bit more than I consider to be “race shoes” (bigger, bulky). But, I’m all about multipurpose so I wanted the same shoes I have been running in lately that will also be great for travel/fashion: Saucony Tempus.
30 miles biking. It’s Ladies Ride night! Biking to, and from the group ride. It was another big group.
Weds – Kayaking day! I hoped we would see some bald eagles on the river, but we did not. The river was nice and calm… until we were almost back to the boat launch and I heard a noise. What?? The kayak had a hole!!! We have had two inflatable kayaks for several years now and this is the first issue we’ve had with them. Even more surprising, upon further inspection, there were two holes. Yikes. Patch kit has been ordered.
Next activity – roller blading! I really should skate more. It’s so enjoyable!
Thurs – 17 miles long run. This run started out good for the first half, faded a bit in the last half, and sucked on the last mile. But, overall average was 10:17 so I was happy about that. I totally failed on my fueling. I had two gels with me but forgot to take the 2nd one. DOH.
12 miles of mountain biking. Another thing our son didn’t get to do this summer was mountain bike, so we hit the trails. My daughter stole my gel cover off my seat which made the ride a bit uncomfortable. Even so we had fun. We also got to play some old school video games. Pretty funny to see the old technology.
We all looked forward to taco night at which we celebrated long runs (Alan ran 18 today), my daughter finished up her summer internship, and having the family together for a bit. That margarita hit the spot!! btw, my family complimented my hair that evening. Guess it’s been too long since I’ve styled it? LOL!!
A trip to the sunflower field was next on my list. It was a cloudy evening but that didn’t damper the beauty of the fields.
Fri – Rest day! (haha, I never really “rest”) We all went indoor rock climbing, followed by ice cream. With this activity I successfully checked off all of the things I wanted to do with our son.
Sat – 4 miles running. When I picked my shoes this morning my good old friends Endorphin Speeds said “hey, remember us??” Ok, maybe not. But I haven’t worn plated shoes since April so I thought I’d give them a try just for funsies. Turns out they weren’t feeling so great! I was feeling a bit janky (was it the 17 miles? Biking? Rock climbing?? LOL, who knows!) It did take me 3 miles to warm up, but that last mile was slightly speedy.
The rest of the day was college move in day! It was crazy busy, but very well organized. We didn’t get to experience that fun last year because our son moved in early and there were hardly any college students and families there. He got a really nice dorm room this year. I think it’s going to be a great year!
Sun – 21 miles cycling. I went out for a ride along the river and noticed my butt was still sore from mountain biking. Darn that missing gel cover!! And what else is on the agenda today? A trip to Cedar Point. Fun, fun, fun!
Need some more inspiration? I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Check out all of the fun blogs there!
I think we packed it all in this week. It’s a bummer to have my son back at college, but I know he’s going to have fun and have a great educational experience (well, hopefully less fun and more education as the primary goal 😉). We’ve got one more week with our daughter at home which will be nice.
Q: With college football coming up soon, who is your favorite team??
One of my son’s classmates made the OSU marching band this year. Very exciting! Hopefully we can see him out on the field at halftime!
I love how you packed in all of your favorite family activities into one weeks! Glad to see that your training is going well 🙂
Training is moving along. Let’s hope those big runs coming up don’t mess me up 🤞🏻
I know how much fun it is to do all the things with the grown kids! Glad you were able to get it all done. And nice work on those miles! i don’t know how you do it all.
I know I’ll have a bit more free time when the kids are back in school so I’m trying my best to fit it all in! Still more travel planning needed. I have to get back to it!
YEs, you really packed it in this week! Including a college move-in. I feel the same way about my son- I miss him, but I’m pretty sure he’s going to have an incredible year. And to answer your question- Baylor Bears all the way!!!
i know why you faded at the end of your long run- you needed that second gel! As a matter of fact, I would take three gels for a run that long. Just sayin.
I remember getting to 13.1 miles and then being fixated on doing running math, and how long my finish time might be based on my half distance… and one thing led to another and it was “oh crap, it’s 16 miles and I didn’t take that gel”. Doh!!
Now that’s a busy week! Great family time, and all those miles (on the bike AND on foot). I hate hate hate to see summer come to a close, but I do LOVE football and all the fun that tailgating adds to the mix. You know I’m a Hawkeye, but my guy Jim introduced me some fun tailgating on the Iowa State grounds, LOL. SO, at least the fall season has that to offer 😉
My weekly cycling miles are decreasing rapidly, but I’m still happy to get some miles in. Those morning bike rides are done for sure! Just too dark out.
What a packed week full of family fun, Lisa. Memories were made! 🙂
I am also happy to hear your running went so great this week… nice work!
It was a good week of running. Fingers crossed it continues that way!
Oh, so exciting! Such a great time – I hope he has a wonderful year full of all new adventures.
I’m a University of Miami fan. We are actually heading to see them play UF at the end of the month.
You’re doing great work. Love to see that 9!

A college football game? How fun! We will be going to an OSU game in September for Family Weekend.
What a great way to spend time with your son.
and so excited that you are running again and well!
You know how I feel about sunflowers… such a short season. I may go again this weekend. Love them!!
We couldn’t find the sunflower field at first based on the directions that we had – but then we saw the yellow fields in the distance. Such a pretty sight!!
Well done on that 17 miler! Its okay to fade a bit, but probably would help to fuel more than one gel in that long of a run 🙂 But it’s hard to remember sometimes. I’m excited for your Berlin experience! First international race, right? So fun!
Yes, first trip overseas!! I don’t know how I’m going to fill my days after being so consumed with this vacation planning 😉 I will remember to take my fuel on my next long run for sure!
Wow, that was a packed full week of fun and you still fit in your training.
Bummer about the holes in your kayak – I hope the patch kit works and you’re back on the water soon. Sooo, is your gel seat cover on loan long term or short term? 😉
I love how you and your husband are wearing OSU shirts, but your son isn’t. LOL To answer your favorite college football team question, go Hokies!

Luckily I had an older seat cover which was just laying around the garage so I put that on. My daughter decided it felt pretty good so she’s keeping it for “her” bike (my former bike)!
Those move in pictures did get quite a few comments on FB about how he wasn’t wearing school gear! Somehow he left those shirts at home so I have to get those to him soon 😂
