We had a crazy break in the winter weather recently and the temperature hit 55.  55 degrees in December? Crazy!! Of course that made it the perfect day to visit the Light Before Christmas at the Toledo Zoo.  I know it was the perfect day, because everyone else in Toledo had the same idea! But no worries, the zoo is big, there is lots of space to roam.

The zoo has some new stuff this year, so I thought I’d share.

First of all, the tunnel is back!  If you have never been to the Toledo Zoo, or haven’t been to the zoo since 1997 (oh geez, is that really 21 years ago?!), you probably have no idea what the tunnel is.  It’s a pedestrian tunnel that goes under the Anthony Wayne Trail street and connects the parking lot to the zoo.  The tunnel opened originally back in the 1930’s. It was the main way we went to the zoo when I was a kid and I have many fond memories of it.  Mostly getting in the middle of it and making spooky ghosts sounds because they echoed. 🙂

Now that it’s open, you have the choice to take the existing bridge, or the tunnel to get to the zoo.  Fun!

Also new at the zoo, they must have taken some of the light exhibits from their Luminosity display, because we had never seen them before.  The color is just amazing on them! Looks like something from a festival in Mexico!

These colored balls were cool.  I guess the cheetahs were not in their space at this time??

You probably can’t tell, but this is a massive tree (85 feet tall!!) which can be seen from quite a distance away.

All of the other excellent light displays were still there, and were beautiful as ever.

Q:  Are there any large light displays near you?

Q:  Have you ever been in the tunnel at the Toledo Zoo?

Q:  Does your town have a zoo?

  1. The Morton Arboretum strings thousands of lights through the trees as well as lasers to put on a fantastic light show called Illumination. It is open nightly from November – January. Really pretty when there is some snow on the ground. They have fire pits spread out through the grounds so you can warm up. I have never been to Toledo. Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, but not Toledo. Chicago has a couple of zoos, one of which, Lincoln Park, is free to the public.

  2. So festive! Hershey Park has QUITE the light display. They are open between Thanksgiving and NYE for Christmas Candylane. I think it’s a huge waste of money because Hershey is always just sooooo expensive. Plus it’s cold and there are kids everywhere. Bah, humbug!
