I’ve come up with my word/phrase for 2021.  It’s simple: “don’t suck”.  LOL!  It’s all encompassing so I think it fits just fine with my outlook and goals.  I do have renewed hope for 2021 with the COVID-19 vaccinations happening to many people I know. I know masks will be around for quite a bit more, and we’ve got a long road ahead of us, but maybe we can get back to some of the things we have been missing out on and it will save many lives (and businesses too!). Running was a bit sparse this week, but I did reach a goal of 1,500 miles this year. I ran 14.25 miles this week, and GASP, no Starbucks!

In case you missed my post on the indoor bike track, you can read it HERE. It was a fun Sunday!!

Mon – 4 miles treadmill.  One of my last two runs of the year.  I will be starting the new year out refreshed hopefully!

Our evening workout was well attended.  My daughter joined us!  She requested we all do headstands afterwards, but it proved almost impossible to do it at the same time.

Tues – 30 mins elliptical, PT exercises.  A sad/funny thing happened this morning.  I was tired and did a huge stretch of my arms above my head when I was getting dressed in my workout clothes… and hurt my back.  DOH!!!  So I also spent time hanging before my workout in hopes of resetting my back.  Luckily, by mid day I felt no pain at all.

At night we took a 2.5 mile walk around one of our metroparks.  They had a “night hike” and opened the park from 5pm to 8pm.  I love how our parks are helping to keep our community active during these dark winter nights.    We got to see where they were doing tree climbing too – very festive at night!

Weds – 40 mins elliptical.  Once again, so thankful to have this low impact option for working out in the morning!

The evening strength workout was from Centr, a program created by Chris Hemsworth.  This was the first time we actually got to see Chris in the workout!  It was pretty funny.  My son enjoyed the mixup from our usual routine.

Thurs – 5.1 miles.  Finished up my year of running at 1,501.5 miles.  Yeah!  I got to catch up with my friend and we chatted the miles away.  I was hoping for a sunrise along the river, but it was a gloomy morning.

Later, we hit the road for our trip up North for skiing! We were partying in our hotel room when the ball dropped in Times Square. Crazy us! LOL

Fri – Skiing.  Happy New Year!  We skied all day at Boyne Highlands.  The big difference at the Michigan resorts is not being able to eat /drink indoors.  We always bring our own lunch so we ate in the truck.  It was a good option, but for those who typically buy lunch, they could eat outdoors.  I’m sure this is a really big reduction of income for these resorts.

Sat – Skiing! We skied most of the day at Nubs Nob.  Now that the dining areas aren’t open on the slopes, I noticed I really miss them!! We usually take a mid morning hot chocolate and granola bar break to warm up and refuel.  Without that break I found myself getting really cold even though it was 30 degrees out.  The rest of the family seemed to miss it too and we ended up heading back home around 1:30pm when normally we’d be out a bit later.  Oh well, it was still a fun ski trip.

Sun – 5.1 miles.  My hamstrings were burning a bit and I really needed to give them a “test run”.  This run felt good overall so that was a confidence boost.   It was a drizzly morning, sad because I wanted to try out my new Goodrs!

These are the first miles for the 2021 mileage challenge. Soon enough we’ll be adding some mileage stickers on our bottles!

I will be handing out some swag for our marathon training group and meeting some of the participants today.  Looking forward to training starting on Monday!

Q: Did you pick a phrase or word for 2021?

Q: What was your drink of choice to toast in the New Year?

We (the adults) had sparkling rose 🙂

  1. Way to end the year/start the new year strong!

I love your word/phrase for 2021 LOL. I am still trying to come up with my word for the year but I’ve narrowed it down to three choices.

    1. My other choice also worked – “be kind”. Be kind to others, and be kind to myself in regards to my running goals. We all need more kindness these days!

  2. Way to finish the year strong! That’s great that your daughter is now working out with you as well. Skiing looks like a lot of fun. I’ve been thinking about one of those inversion tables which one do you have?

    1. We bought that inversion table years ago when my husband’s back hurt. It was a cheapie from Dick’s Sporting Goods. Brand is “Champ”! People often list them for sale on Ebay for Facebook Marketplace though because it seems like people need them for a bit, but then don’t want to store them after they are no longer needed! I do end up using it occasionally and it’s nice to have.

  3. what a fun way to celebrate the New Year! I would miss the warm-up while skiing too 🙂 especially if skiing at a place where your car has to be parked pretty far away!

    1. Luckily my husband was kind. He usually parks the truck far away! I can’t imagine how the big resorts out in Colorado are doing. Those parking lots are far away.

  4. GLad you had a fun ski trip despite the changes in routine. I personally don’t feel safe eating indoors yet.
Glad your back issue resolved itself quickly

  5. Not a fan of skiing, but a lot of my family is. When we lived in VT, my BIL & sister used to come visit so they could ski. Looks like a good time was had by all!

That’s great that your back relaxed so quickly.

Toast & stay up til the ball drops? Not this girl! I stayed up just a smidge later to talk to my MIL. Then Mr. Judy was on his own because Bandit goes to bed with me.

    Not sucking is good. 😉

    1. Vermont skiing looks really nice. We have never skied out east other than New York state. NYC looked very surreal with the lack of people in Times Square when the ball dropped!

  6. Sadly, I fell asleep on the couch, but woke up when I heard fireworks LOL We celebrated the next morning, though, after my NYD run with Barb…can you say mimosas? ;- That ski trip looks like a great family thing…but it would never happen in my world. The hubby skis and that’s it. I’d be content to sit in the lodge, knitting. The kids would choose to stay home. yadda yadda yadda. Happy 2021!

    1. That’s the one thing that was missing – people hanging out in the lodge waiting for their families! That’s a big deal so I’m not sure what those people were doing. Maybe they just dropped off the skiers and went into town shopping!

  7. I didn’t pick a word or phrase for 2021; I also haven’t set any goals. There’s just too much uncertainty right now!

I used to ski a lot–I grew up about 15 minutes from a ski resort. I can’t tell you the last time I went though! I do like XC skiing. Hoping to do some of that if the snow sticks around.

    1. We owned xc skis when I was a teen, but now we just don’t get enough snow around here to be able to ski! I would like to do that if I could. It’s really a workout!

  8. Congrats on those 1501 miles! That’s fantastic! I am jealous of the skiing, but would miss the lodge breaks too. I’m fine bringing my own food, but do look forward to hot cocoa and a few minutes warming up! I can see why they had to do it. The lodge culture isn’t exactly covid protocol. I’m impressed that your whole family can do a headstand. I’ve been trying to maintain that “skill” even without going to yoga class.

    1. I was a bit surprised to see a guy in front of us in the lift line drinking a beer!!! (and what, they sell beer in aluminum bottles??) Yep, as the day goes on I’m sure the lodge area got quite a bit closer together. Shaking my head at those people!

  9. Congrats on your 2020 mileage!! I have not picked a word yet. So many choices. Ha, I went to bed early on Thursday so no drink for me. But I would have liked a martini. 🙂

    1. “Let’s try this again” would also be an appropriate phrase for a lot of people LOL! I will also be focusing on getting healthy (yet again!) and looking for some new answers to my hamstring problems.

  10. I don’t pick a word for the year, but do enjoy reading which word others choose (and why).

I made blueberry martinis for New Year’s Eve, but we drank them around 7 PM and were asleep by 11 PM. I ran my NYD 5K at 8 AM so I wanted to get plenty of rest. Even though it was virtual, I wanted to beat the rain and I did by about 30 minutes.

Congrats on your 1,501.5 miles! Happy New Year!

  11. Awesome job on your 2020 mileage! That is so funny (and fun) about the headstands.

That ski trip looks like so much fun. I haven’t been skiing in years. My oldest son in heading to Breckenridge in a couple of weeks and I am so, so jealous!

  12. Great word/prase LOL! 😉

Glad you had a fun ski trip! My husband took our boys skiing New Year’s Day and said while the experience was a little different they had a good time.

Congrats on your awesome mileage for 2020!

  13. Congrats on meeting your 1500 mile goal! That was mine too for this year and I was pleased to be able to make it. It doesn’t happen every year, that’s for sure. I love your yearly mantra. I think I need one for 2021 – “It has to get better, right?” perhaps that should be it, ha! I toasted the ball drop from my house with some nice bubbly. It was delicious and then I went to bed.

  14. Hooray on reaching your 1500 mile goal.

    Love your family workout routine.

That ski trip looked fun. I skied when I was young but not in years. I really hate the cold weather!!

    Don’t suck = great word!!

Mine is Resilience! I am hoping we all can be resilient in 2021. it will be a long time until everything is back to normal.

    1. Resilience is a great choice! We all need a strong comeback. The cancellation of school activities has been a blessing for having quality time with my kids.

  15. What a fun ski trip! I know lots of people who went skiing over the holidays and I’m glad the resorts could at least get some cash flow. Love that headstand group pic!
I runfess this was the first year ever that I did not stay up ’til midnight on New Years. The NYC New Year was good enough. Besides. Chicago’s TV coverage is lame.
