Another week of rest and recovery with my sports hernia. I did start PT this week and also attempted a few short runs. This week included some fun biking events and I’m happily riding instead of running. (have I mentioned how much I love my bike?? 😊) Running = 3.5 miles, biking = 117 miles! (confession – I was super happy with my accomplishment of 117 miles this week until I saw my “cyclist” friend had 190!!! Goals!)

Mon – 30 mile bike ride.  I was hoping for 40 miles this morning, but I’m still not sure how long it actually takes me to ride and I had a limited amount of time to ride.  And, when I first woke up it was raining so I slept in!  This turned out to be a good ride.  It was a bit windy so a challenge on the way out, and I flew home, getting a few PRs in Strava along the way. Yay!

Next, hydration in the form of iced coffee. Free drinks at our new local coffee shop for their training day!! 🙂 🙂

The rest of the day was spent at orientation for the University of Toledo with my daughter.  Follow up from last week – the poison oak/sumac rash was MUCH better on my daughter’s face. Phew!! Not going to lie, I did get a bit choked up during one of the presentations to the parents about kids going off to college for the first time.  Oh the changes ahead of us!

Tues – Physical Therapy appt.  It was my first PT appt for my sports hernia. I was a bit disappointed because I wanted to get some exercises to help out, but I was told I need to do stretching first, then we work on strength.  So, I’ve got a list of stretches to do and I’ll get at it.  I’m not super hopeful about this course of action at this time, but I know, body parts are all related and we need to work on other parts to help strengthen other areas, but still…. He did say I could try running again and stop if there is pain.  Maybe 1 mile.

16 mile bike ride.  It’s Ladies Ride Night!  We had a slower ride tonight, and my husband went off with his new riding group for another fast ride.  I do enjoy my social ride, but I’d really like to pick up the pace too.  We enjoyed food from a local restaurant after this ride along with cookies and beer.  These are my kind of people!  Since I don’t have a friend that rides with me regularly I get paired up with whomever is lined up with me when we start.  I’ve had some good conversations with new people on these rides.

Weds – 21 miles bike ride, 16.7 avg speed.  OMG, what a fun ride!  My husband and I rode with this group last year and it turned out to be such a fun speed workout for me.  This year the group is larger with some new riders.  Unfortunately the new group riders are just that – new riders.  There is a bit of a learning curve to riding in groups, and a big difference in bikes (road bikes vs hybrids).  What started out as a slow learner group quickly turned into a speedy ride when my husband and I were offered to take the lead for the front of the group, we gladly accepted the role.  We ended up with group of 9 people.  We took turns pulling (being the lead riders) which was appreciated because this ride always has strong crosswinds (named the “Windsday ride”, and it’s out on the country roads with the cornfields!).  Prior to splitting the group we had speeds around 15 mph, but on our own we averaged 18 mph!  Even hit 20 mph for one mile with the wind at our backs 🙂 Although I did hear our riders saying they were challenged to hang on for the ride, they were all smiles at the end with “that was my fastest ride!” being exclaimed.  Fun!!! Oh – two guys in our group are 83 and 84 years old. Wow, they ride fast!!

As part of our annual Mileage Maniacs challenge, this month is to draw out “Happy” on Strava (as in Brooks, Run Happy) and today was the letter P.  This is now a walk, and not a run, but it still counts.  It turned out well!

Thurs – 1 MILE RUN!  I was on a high after that ride last night, so why not give running a try? My PT said to try a mile, so that’s what I did.  How did it feel?  Well, not fixed, but not as broken!  Not pain, and certainly not “stabbing” pain, but there was a tight feeling like a knot in my lower abs.  I just went slow and one mile felt right for as much as I could tolerate.  So despite still feeling broken, I also felt encouraged by this test run.

Fri – 30 miles biking.  Once again, I was hoping to go for 40 miles, but had time constraints.  It was raining for the first half hour of this ride!   Luckily it wasn’t slippery and it cleared up, but it sure got my bike and shirt dirty.

It’s Zach’s 16th birthday.  Too bad it’s raining all day, but he did enjoy his gift, going out to dinner, and cake & ice cream.   (and his free birthday Starbucks treat!)

Sat – 2 miles of RUNNING!  It’s been a few days so it’s time to try running again.  I still feel tightness and pressure which kind of feels like I have to pee!  But it wasn’t pain, so I cautiously ran 2 miles.  I plan on trying every other day to see how things feel.

3 miles on the bike, just to check out an adjustment to make sure it was working right.

10 miles of rollerblading. We hit the bike trail this morning.  It’s a smooth trail with minimal roads to cross.  Very nice!  I did feel the groin pain a bit more than running on this activity, but it was bearable.  Also, some ducks were hanging out on the of the trail. I guess they taking a break.  So cute!

As part of Zach’s birthday celebration we went bowling.  What a fun surprise when it turned out to be glow bowling!!

Sun – 16 miles biking.  Just a “short ride” for the morning 🙂 it was windy, hot, and wonderful.  I washed my bike yesterday and it was feeling all smooth and happy today.

Our son joined us at the gym today.  It’s been so long since I’ve been there (I usually don’t go often in the summer).  He has a guest pass to give it a try.  And later, we’re heading back to Ray’s Indoor Mountain Bike park!

Need some more inspiration? I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Check out all of the fun blogs there!

Q: Ever been glow bowling?

  1. Glad you are starting to feel better and could get in a few miles! I’ve never been glow bowling- I was actually just thinking about how its been SO long since Ive been bowling at all. Happy birthday to your son!

    1. I’m not the best bowler, but I did end up winning the first game! And I got 1 strike, so it was all good. At least people can’t really see how bad of a bowler you are with the dark lights. LOL!

  2. Hooray for starting PT! Glad that you’re starting to feel better and that you even got in some running. You really rocked your cycling mileage this week too.

As a kid I used to go bowling every weekend and it was always so much fun. Thanks for the reminder to try bowling again!

    1. I would often tag along with my mom when I was a kid. She was on a bowling league. I didn’t get to play but had a lot of fun goofing off with my friend! I wish I bowled better, but I don’t play enough to be any good. Apparently my Wii bowling skills didn’t transfer over to real life bowling!!

  3. That’s exciting that you got some runs in! Such an odd injury- and did the PT (or anyone) tell you how they think it happened??? But, sounds like it’s improved- the pain is much less.
Your cycling is impressive- I’m going to ask my PT guy if I could do some cycling. It might be time to switch things up from pool running everyday!
You and I can commiserate in the fall- my son is going to college and it’s going to be hard to see him go!

    1. I’m on a roll getting these I injuries that are not well known and seem to last forever (the high hamstring tendinopathy and now the sports hernia!). I’m just hoping a lot of rest will take care of it.
Let’s not think about college in the fall, ok? Ugh.

  4. I’m so glad that you are enjoying your riding so much & that you are able to run a little too! Hopefully the PT plan works.

The glow bowling sounds fun. It’s been decades since I last bowled!

Sounds like you had a great week despite the circumstances.

    1. Glow bowling is just crazy! Lots of fun music too. I’d say it messed up my bowling because I was distracted, but really I’m just not that great of a bowler to begin with. Ha!

  5. it is great that biking does not bother your injury. Wow that’s some serious bike mileage in one week. Not sure my butt could take that! Way to have a positive attitude and do what you can

    1. I have been a lot more comfortable in the saddle lately. And yes, sooooo glad I still have that as an option for exercise. I have no idea how long until this issue is gone 😐

  6. I agree with Debbie…I’d love to go for a ride with you, too! Very impressive mileage on those wheels 😉 I’m so glad to hear you’re feeling improvements with your injury!

    1. It would be fun to join you on a ride too! I’m going to have to set my goals even higher now after seeing my friend’s weekly mileage (not that I’m competitive or anything 😉).

  7. Glad the test running has gone OK and hope that means you’re healing well. I have a terrible fear of getting my fingers stuck in the bowling ball and following it down the alley so I don’t go often!! I don’t think we have the glow version here, though I might be wrong – found out the other day you can go axe-throwing in the city centre …!

    1. We have an axe throwing place here too! I don’t think my friends have gone yet. You are right though – a lot of the bowling balls did have very small finger holes!! That would be awful!

  8. Glad you still can do all the strength and biking. It’s amazing how much we miss running when we’re injured. We’ll do anything for that specific post-run feeling 🙂 I hope you continue to heal and that the action plan works!

  9. So many fun things going on this week! And not only did you get in all the miles, but you had so much fun, too! I love it!

Never been glow bowling, and we will have a lowkey 4th of July.

    1. I am just hoping to go see fireworks for the 4th. They always sound like a great idea and then they happen so late. It’s hard to get motivated to go out that late these days 😂

  10. Glad to see that you’re getting better. I have to agree that PT is kind of frustrating. But it has helped me a lot with my SIJ injury, so there’s that. Nice to see you running again!

It was hard to say goodbye to my boys–one to college and one to his apartment in the city. I do miss them, but I’m so glad they are branching out and doing their thing. I hear from them almost every day via text and that’s pretty nice too.

    1. That’s great that you hear from your sons so often. We have a daily Snapchat streak with my daughter so hopefully that continues because it’s fun to see a little glimpse into her life each day.

  11. Good to see you running again! It may be easy and short miles but over time you will get better and run more. I like to bowl but do it mostly for my nieces and nephews. I suck but still enjoy it. I would love to try glow bowling!

    1. I am feeling pretty hopeful about my recovery from the sports hernia. I am missing a lot of races around here, but I do need to take it easy to get healthy so I’m trying my best to be conservative!

  12. Glad to hear the sports hernia seems to be healing. Great job easing back in. I have been glow bowling and it is fun! Happy birthday to your son and all the best with the road to college. Greg and I cried so hard sitting in a Starbucks the morning of drop-off day. When the time came to actually leave her, I was okay! A huge milestone for sure!

    1. It is going to be so weird around here when my daughter is at college. I’m just trying to make the most of our time together right now. I’m sure we will have some big tears at drop off too.

  13. That’s great that you love to bike. I’d be screwed if I got injured. Biking is just not my thing.

You can now run a little which is super news.

I was never a good bowler but always thought it was fun.

Congrats to your son…exciting times ahead.
