Ah the mountains. This view will never get old!! This week we were in Colorado enjoying some ski time with our son, who was on Spring Break from college. Unfortunately we couldn’t take our daughter also due to Spring Breaks at different times. It was weird to take one kid on a trip like this without the other, so I made this a shorter trip – fly in, ski 4 consecutive days and fly home. With some frequent flyer miles and other deals it was actually a pretty affordable trip! I skied 70 miles this week, walked a few miles, biked 17 miles, and ran 20 miles. This is how the week went down…

Sun – Skiing, Copper Mountain.  We spent our first day of Spring Break skiing in the beautiful warm sunshine!  The forecast is for sunny skies all week and even though it would be great to get some new snow at night, spring skiing is the best!

We enjoyed lunch on the slopes basking in the sun.  We skied hard.  Well, a little too hard.  Half way through the day Alan’s leg hurt too much and he had to end his day early.  He rolled his ankle a few weeks ago and it was apparent that skiing on challenging runs made it worse.

Mon – Skiing, Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin).  Alan had to make the tough decision to stay at the condo while Zach and I skied.  He spent the day resting his foot and icing it.  Zach and I skied all around the mountain and then he hiked up to some extreme terrain.

Tues – Skiing, A-Basin ski resort.  After a good day of rest Alan was able to join us for a full day of skiing.  We kept it easy and let our son go hit the extreme terrain again on his own. He had fun.

Did I mention that we have not been sleeping well at our rental condo?  I am a light sleeper and there are some loud pipe sounds that happen in the wee hours of the night and it wakes me up.  Last night the neighbor’s smoke detector started chirping (low battery) at 4am!!  Yes, it woke me up and I couldn’t fall back asleep until I finally turned on the white noise on my phone.  So I let the owner of our rental know about it and asked if he could do something about it.  Since no one was in the neighbor’s condo eventually the decision was made by someone to call the Fire/Emergency crew.  Yep, 5 guys in fire fighter gear came over around 8pm, picked the neighbor’s door lock, and checked for smoke and gas/carbon monoxide!  All clear. And then they turned off the chirping alarm.  Hallelujah!

Weds – Last day of skiing, at Copper Mountain.  Luckily Alan was still feeling good enough to join us.  We did stay on the easier groomed runs, but that’s OK, I don’t mind groomed runs at all!  We were blasting down the mountain.  I hit 36 mph but the guys hit 49 mph!!  So fast!

We had dinner in Breckenridge and visited the troll.

Thurs – 2 miles running.  When we arrived home from our trip, the weather seemed pretty good!  51 degrees seemed like a warm day.  I still needed to record my daily Strava activity so I went for a run. Ugh, a run at 6pm really wasn’t a good idea and I was quite cold!  I decided 2 miles was plenty.

Fri – 4 miles running.  After having my sleep all messed up the past week it felt amazing to be sleeping in my own bed, with my own pillows.  I slept in until 9:30 and my Garmin gave me a great sleep score (93!)  Time to get back to training.  Just a few miles to get my legs moving.  It wasn’t easy!  I had some new shoes, so that was motivating.

17 miles cycling.  It got up to 75 degrees today so I just had to get out on a bike ride – the first of the year!  My son joined me and we both agreed that we are not in “cycling shape” yet.  It was a bit windy so that didn’t help.  And an hour on my bike seat was enough for a first ride.  Ouch!

Sat – 14.5 miles, long run.  Yep, only 14.5.  The plan said 18 but I barely had 14 miles in my legs.   Lots of things not to like about this run – I was too warm (off came the shirt), it was freaking windy, I was exhausted, I was chafing (ouch!), and then it started raining.  I waited to start this run until the morning rain cleared and thought I had a window of clear weather.  Well guess again!  I started doing a run/walk to just get this thing done about 7 miles into it and finally decided it wasn’t doing me any good, both mentally and physically, so ended it early.  Moving on! This really made me question if I want to drop down to the half at Glass City. Still debating!

Good news, the ice cream parlor is open and even though my run sucked, it’s always a good time for ice cream… especially when the whole family is home!

Sun – Rest day (much needed!)  Time to drive Zach back to college.  None of us (especially Zach!) are ready for him to be back at school, but it is what it is.  In 5 weeks or so he’ll be back home for the summer and we are looking forward to it!

Need some more inspiration? I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Check out all of the fun blogs there!

Q: Have the ice cream parlors near you opened up for the season?

  1. What a fun week — except the sleep disruptions! Yikes on having to call the fire department but glad they could take care of it.

We did not hike to other terrain on our ski trip, but my son is talking about it for next time — I’m not sure I’m up for it!

    1. We’ve hiked up quite a few times, but I tell ya, I could take a fast groomer any day!! So fun. Well, except for when there are other people on the run in which case I’ll be slower and cautious. My knee was complaining a bit so I was happy to keep it easy most days.
That chirping smoke alarm was awful. I felt like I was losing my mind listening to it!

  2. As mentioned in my recap, we had warm weather most of the week, but the wind was RUDE! With temps in the 70’s, I would have loved to be on the bike, but not with 15+mph wind. Sounds like it was a great week! I love how active your entire family is!

    1. The bike ride worked out pretty good – my son was supposed to ride with someone else, and it got canceled – and my husband was supposed to ride with me, but his foot hurt! So, I got to ride with Zach. He’s a lot like Alan… faster than me! Phew, it was a workout.

  3. We had spring-like temps for a few days this week before winter came back. I enjoyed it while it lasted but did not enjoy the time change! Sounds like a good, active week for you too.

    1. I still haven’t fully caught up to East Coast time, but thankfully the time change going west was no big deal. I need to force myself back on schedule Monday!

  4. This sounds amazing (except for Alan’s sore foot.) That first picture is stunning. You guys have really been skiing it up lately!
Bummer about the run- it happens. Your body was probably still tired from all that skiing. And the lack of sleep! Tomorrow starts a brand new week. Hope everything feels good.

    1. This is true – probably not my best prep for an 18 mile long run! I’m just not sure if my heart is in the full this year. I’ll give it a few more weeks and see how I’m feeling. I’d rather be successful at the half than to just make it through the full!

  5. Looks like you also had a fun week of skiing! Way to fit in so much activity of all kinds. Have a fab week ahead

  6. Poor Alan! That’s a bummer!

But for the rest of you, what a lovely skiing adventure!

So for the most part, our ice cream parlors are open year round. I think Rita’s is the only one that opens on the first day of spring, but they are a NJish custard chain so that would make sense.

  7. I love this for you. I used to ski with my family all the time when I was younger and I have such fond memories. We actually were able to all ski together again last year and it was the best.

    1. It was odd without my daughter there, but we still had fun. We are entering that new phase of life where we have to figure out vacations – who can go, schedule around work, and going without people sometimes. It’s different!!
