This week was a bit different for me. I had to work all week! It was a big difference from my typical 2 days a week gig. It’s been a while since I’ve needed to make adjustments to my workouts based on work start time so that was a bit challenging. Given the option of getting up extra early, I opted to just skip some workouts! Right now my training plan is going to focus on adding more recovery and cross training. As much as I hoped my glute/hamstring pain would go away if I ignored it, I did end up investigating the issue this week and I’m convinced it’s the dreaded Piriformis pain. Also, I was reminded that it could be overstretched, so I am avoiding stretching it and working on strengthening it (clamshells & bridges). Fingers crossed recovery doesn’t take forever, like it has in the past. Miles run this week = 24.5, miles biked this week = 124(!!). Let’s get into it…
Mon – 4 “easy” miles. Is anything ever easy in the heat?? I was going to run on my treadmill but when I opened the window to check the temperature outside, I heard birds chirping and figured why not give it a go outside! It was a sweaty one #sportsbrasquad

Tues – Bike, swim, bike! With temps in the 90’s it was definitely the day for something OTHER than running. I started with an early ride. 22 miles before work. Perfect morning for it! Then coffee and work email on the patio.

On my lunch hour I swam some laps in our pool. The water temperature was 89 degrees! I have no idea how far I swam, but 15 mins was a good enough workout for me [I almost died of boredom!!]. It was interesting because my glute didn’t hurt until I did the breaststroke. The motion of moving my leg out in that direction caused pain! This is what led me to investigate the area of pain. I kept doing it slow because I thought maybe it was good exercise for it. Sad part of my swim – despite wearing a swim cap, my hair was completely soaked. Wet hair is the bad part about swimming!
27 miles biking – Tuesdays are Ladies Ride night! Since it was 93 degrees I thought we might pass on the ride since my husband and son have a challenging group ride. Even though they had plans to ride on their own, they ended up talking to the group as they passed by and were convinced to join the group because they “would go slower”. hahaha! Of course they didn’t. Our ladies ride was very pleasant in the heat, rolling through the shade, and the guys ride was grueling, with avg speed of 20.5. oof!

Weds – Rest day! It’s Zach’s 20th birthday, so I was in charge of pancake making and my husband picked up his Starbucks birthday drink. Lucky guy! We also went out for dinner to celebrate. We are actually the lucky ones to have him in our lives ❤️

Thurs – 5 miles, tempo run. Written plan was miles 2-4 as marathon pace miles. Ok, sure, whatever pace that is! The fun part about doing this run so early in the training plan is that it acts as a baseline which can be referred to in later weeks. The pace was decent enough, especially considering the humidity. I even had one mile with an 8:xx. Wow! I got to run on a new path that is being built near my home. I’m not sure if they will pave it, but at least it gets me off the busy street.

28 miles, biking – Group ride night! This week we decided to bike to the group ride, which is 6 miles from our house. This was a great idea, until my husband got a flat just a few miles into the group ride!! Upon inspection it turns out that it was TWO flat tires. Doh! Luckily our daughter was able to come pick him up since he only had one spare tube. For the rest of us on the ride, it started out a bit sketchy because we had a big group (17 people) and it was sprinkling. I’m always concerned about the roads being slippery when it rains. Due to the questionable weather, a few pace groups were grouped together which resulted in a bigger and faster ride. We were flying! I am trying to improve my cycling by increasing my cadence. The optimal cadence is between 80-100 and I’m usually closer to 60! I ended up with an average of 74. I don’t know if it was the cadence or the weather, but this ride felt easy despite having an average speed of 18.3 mph during the group portion. Well ok, it could have been me drafting in the big group 😉 So fun! I will continue to work on my cadence.

It’s great to have two experienced bike techs at the house (daughter’s boyfriend and Zach). They changed the flat tires in no time!

Fri – 3.3 mile run. Another sweaty humid morning!

Sat – 12 miles, long run. My plan was to get up early and knock this out to avoid the heat. I also wanted to catch the sunrise at the river. I almost made it! Close enough, I was rewarded with some beautiful views. I was soaked in sweat at the end of this run.

I tried a “new to me” Starbucks drink – an Iced Horchata Oakmilk Shaken Espresso. YUMMMM. This one is one of my top 5 favorite drinks for sure!

30 mile bike ride. My husband and I went out for a ride in the midday. Guess what? It was hot then too (84 degrees)! 🙂 No pictures were taken because we tried to avoid standing still. I used the feature on Strava to come up with a route for me and I think it did a good job creating one. Avg cadence was 76 on this, increased a little!
Sun – planned 16 miles, biking. We are biking to a diner for breakfast. If pancakes are involved, it’s easy to talk our daughter into joining us 🙂
On Monday we dropped off our litter of “coffee” named kittens and of course we brought home another litter to foster! They were described as “hissy”. The group of three are the most adorable fuzzballs! So scared, and yes, hissy. We are working on it! The first night they woke me up at 3:30 am crying. Oh man. The little tabby is not eating well, so that’s another one of our challenges this week. It’s always something!

Q: Do you ever use biking cadence as a performance stat?
Q: Are you a fan of Horchatas?

It’s good you are figuring out what is going — I hope your recovery plan does the trick.
My natural preference is to ride slower in low gear, so I do try to keep my cadence up to counter act that.
As much as I love Starbucks, I stick with the plain drinks—usually an Americano.
Trying to raise my cycling cadence has been an interesting experiment. Seems silly to spin so much, but after watching others in our group ride it is quite common. I’m all for improvement!
As you know, I ‘ve been there w the piraformis. It’s that pain in the ass that comes back when you least expect it. Focusing on cross training and recovery sounds like a great plan to me. Have a great week
Piriformis pain can drag on forever!! Thanks to watching a bunch of YouTube videos I now have a thorough knowledge of how that muscle works. I do think strengthening is the way to go.
THOSE KITTENS!!!! They’re just big poofs of fuzz! So, so cute. I hope you can get them to be less hissy.
Yeah, it sounds like it could be your piriformis. But you ran 12 miles and I assume it didn’t bother you much. I think your plan of rehabbing it with strength is a good one- I’ve also irritated my piriformis in the past with too much stretching.
I haven’t had that starbucks drink, but I’ve seen it on the menu- it looks GOOD.
Thankfully running doesn’t hurt and either does biking. Speedwork and hills might be another story though, but I’m not even thinking about tempting fate with that!
The kittens are adorable!! Now if they would just start eating better…
I. love. hissy. kitties. Especially the little black ones. Oh, they melt my heart.
And happy birthday to your son!
I love all the oat milk iced shaken espressos. They are one of my favorite drink lines. I can’t decide which is my favorite between the horchata, the hazelnut, and the brown sugar.
So glad the bikes were all an easy fix. That must have been super frustrating.
It’s always challenging to have to change things around, especially because of work, but it looks like you were able to get it all in.
I will admit that I would be sunk if I had a flat tire. I think I do have all of the resources I need to fix it in my bike bag (along with $5 for ice cream!!), and I’ve seen it done on our Ladies Ride, but I think it would be a huge disaster! I’d be fine with just calling the SAG wagon for a ride home 🙂 The guys had those flats fixed in minutes!
Wow, you had a great week of activity despite the blazing heat! Well done!
Whenever I’ve had a flat tire, I’ve had to call someone to pick me up, lol. I had the best intentions of learning how to change a tire, but it never happened. I don’t ride much anymore–I had a bad crash a few years ago, and I’ve never felt as comfortable on my bike since then.
I didn’t mention it, but our community did have a terrible bike accident a few weeks ago. A car crossed the center line and hit a group of 3 riders (going opposite way). One cyclist was killed. So horrible. I didn’t know the woman who was killed but she was very involved in the triathlon community. It’s a huge wakeup call for for drivers to pay attention. And a reminder for cyclists to always be aware. Safety is not guaranteed.
Nice job staying active even with the heat. It was hot in Cleveland this week too, so I ran inside a few days. Glad you were able to fix your bikes no problem. And happy birthday to your son (my son’s bday was this week too!) – Starbucks and pancakes sound like a great start to the 20th birthday 🙂
Birthday Starbucks drinks are always a great treat!
I love that drink too… on my fave list.
I want one of those kitties.
I had some hot temps here too. It had cooled down since.
The kittens are so cute – especially the black fuzz balls, which just look like eyeballs! They weren’t doing so good over the weekend, but they are back in play mode today!
I would have NO CLUE what to do if I had a flat tire while on the road. I was airing my tires Friday night (so the bike would be ready and waiting for me when I finished with Saturday’s race)…and I accidentally unscrewed the cap and the valve thing (?) and a loud pop, even louder hiss, and the tire went completely flat. UGH! I was in a slight panic, but screwed the valve thing (whatever it’s called, LOL) back on, and all went well after that. Whew!
I find this extremely funny because around 1/4 of the times I deflate my tire as I’m trying to add air!! 🤣🤣
So I have recently gotten into cycling because we committed to riding RAGBRAI. I’m not convinced I like it more than running yet but I know that it will be great cross training once I return to running full time. Your speeds are crazy! We are averaging about 15 mpg, though my husband could do 17/18 if I weren’t so slow. It makes me nervous.
Group riding is a whole different thing! You can easily ride 4 mph faster with drafting. It does take a while to get used to being so close together, but it always feels like we are one big machine when I ride in a group. It’s a rush! I can hang on at 21 mph but once we get faster than that I struggle. On my own I usually ride around 15-16 mph too 🙂
Oh, I just read your comment above about the rider who was hit by a car…that is so scary and tragic. Wow…how heartbreaking for everyone involved and yes good reminder to us all.
On a brighter note, I love all your sunrise pics! And those kittens…I would love to get a cat! I’m not sure how Rut would react but I think they’d love each other eventually. A lot of cats here are outdoor/indoor cats, which is new to me! (And new to Ruth when she encounters them ha!)
I’m glad you’re sorting out the pain and hopefully the exercises work to keep it at bay!
You never expect to get hit by an oncoming car on a ride. The driver was very young too, and distracted. What a horrible way to die and horrible for that person to live with that memory for the rest of their life!
Sorry to hear you’re still having glute/hamstring pain. 🙁
I usually naturally fall in a high-80’s cadence when riding, but that’s after working to increase it (used to be mid-70’s).
Hope the new kittens are settling in and hissing less!
