Hi everyone! If you’ve been reading my blog lately, there’s been a lot of Starbucks talk going on. This week I had to laugh because not only did I get my two free drinks on the weekend for being a Visa cardholder, I also got a Barista pick (could be used for another drink, it’s just another Visa benefit you get), AND I won 150 stars playing the Starbucks for Life Game. So yep, that means I got FOUR more free drinks this week without using my 39 remaining free drinks. Life is good 🙂 I even tried an Eggnog Frappucino and it was unexpectedly yummy. But on to fitness… 23 miles of running this week! Here’s what went down…
Mon – 30 mins elliptical. Getting my daily morning sweat session! In the evening I did a Peloton Strength class. The Intermediate classes haven’t been challenging me all the time, so we tried an Advanced class. Holy moly, my arms were toast. We did a bunch of skull crushers and also something called a “scapular push up”. WTF? That was some freaky torture. And we did them one armed. !!!!!! I feared I was going to mess up my shoulder from a previous mountain biking “incident”, but luckily it didn’t bother it.
Tues – 5 miles treadmill. I was excited that my watch matches up with my treadmill pace very well when I wear my footpod! I was hoping not to need the footpod, but I’d much rather see correct measurements than not use it.
One reason this is important – I just joined a 2021 Mileage Challenge with Dave’s Running. There will be a Strava group and our running miles will be recorded. Manually entered miles will count, but only up to 100 miles a year. So, I really want to get credit for my miles! BTW, this program is open to anyone, no matter where you live. There are 3 levels of participation and the lowest level is free! (a link is HERE)
We have been checking out the houses in our area with synchronized holiday light shows. The effort and talent put into these displays are really very impressive! This one had lights across the streets and tied four houses together!
Weds – 20 min Peloton Barre class, 25 mins Elliptical. I thought I’d try out a different class, and I was very happy with the Barre class! With just 20 mins it was challenging enough. I recommend it!
PM workout, 30 mins Pilates. What I would not recommend is the Peloton Pilates class. This was just not the class for me. I have never taken Pilates, so I had no idea what to expect. Maybe this is a typical class, but it bored me completely. We did the 10 min intro class, and it seemed like it was 8 minutes of breathing exercises. The 20 min intermediate class was no better, and I almost just turned it off! After the class we had a headstand contest to liven things up a bit! I was quite happy that I could hold my pose for a decent amount of time!
Thurs – 5 miles running. I was actually excited to run in the cold dark this morning because we got snow!! I wore my xmas tights and noxgear lights. I was feeling very festive!
Fri – 3.5 miles running. Still enjoying the snow!
Sat – Rest day! We went to Frankenmuth MI, which is a small town decorated in a Bavarian theme. We also did some shopping at Bronner’s, which is the largest Christmas store in the world! Need an avocado ornament? They’ve got it! A sloth ornament? Yep, those too! Trust me, they’ve got something for everyone. I was really happy to find an ornament for Grand Teton because we somehow forgot to buy one when we went on vacation this year!
Sun – 10 mile, long run. With this run I now have 27 more miles to hit 1,500 for the year. I never set a goal, but as soon as I get near the end of the year, it’s a mental challenge for me to ignore any “level”. This one is going to be close for sure!
Random note – I found this reflective jacket at a thrift store this week! The style is a little old, but wow, check out the reflection!!
And I got a nice gift from our Moms/She Runs This Town Secret Santa exchange. Love the quote on the socks 🙂
For those celebrating Christmas, I hope you have a great one this week! For those celebrating Hanukkah, I hope your holiday was great too! I gotta say, with the COVID vaccines rolling out this past week, I really have a positive outlook on 2021.
Need some more inspiration? I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Check out all of the fun blogs there!
Q: Have you heard of a scapular push up?
Q: Did you have any mileage goal for 2020? How did it go for you?
I can’t recall a scapular push-up, but I’ve probably done them LOL (and there’s probably a really good reason ‘ve forgotten them). Way to go on the (almost) 1500 miles! That’s amazing! I haven’t even tallied my YTD miles…since I missed a few months of running, my totals are way down anyways. Now, if we were talking biking… 😉

I have enjoyed learning new workout moves with the Peloton classes. I’ve also learned to despise renegade rows!!
Nice job this week! I don’t really like Pilates either. I think I would rather do yoga. I didn’t have a mileage goal but I was happy with my total for the year!
Sadly, I don’t have the patience for yoga and this particular Pilates class was too slow for my taste too!
I love all of your Starbucks stories! It gives me ideas on different types of drinks to try 🙂 Love that jacket that you found in the thrift store – that reflection is awesome.
I definitely tend to stick with my tried and true drinks at Starbucks but I’d like to find some new favorites. Even though it’s a free drink it feels like a waste of money if I pick one I don’t end up liking!
Wow- that jacket is very reflective! I have a similar reflective one from several years ago at Athleta and I paid a pretty penny for it (though to be honest, it has lasted quite awhile so far!)
Is yours Athleta? http://www.therightfits.com/2015/02/athleta-reflective-running-start-jacket/
I’m feeling very positive about 2021 too! My sister who is an ob/gyn already gets her first vaccine this week and she’s not even technically “front-line.” We’re on our way!
Nice week!! I love your festive tights. And that Christmas store sounds amazing!! My goal was 1500 miles this year and I blew through it thanks to an unplanned running streak.this may be my highest year ever!
Melissa – great job on getting your mileage goal! My highest year was 1830 miles. Back in the days when I wasn’t always injured LOL! Those were the good old days for sure!
The jacket is a brand named Illuminite. I did see they still make clothes but I’ve never heard of them before. But heck, for $6 I couldn’t resist!
Once I hit a thousand miles in a year for the first time (hey, last year!) I realized that I would never do a mileage goal again because the goal can’t always be “more”. But like you I’m targeting the nearest 100 miles…I only have 22 to go, so I’m taking it easy for the rest of the year.
I’ve been reluctant to get a footpod but I like challenges so I’d get one in a heartbeat if I was doing the Dave’s challenge…either that or I’d have to let my treadmill miles be 10% under reported or whatever the whim of the Garmin is that day. I’d go through 100 manual miles pretty fast, that’s for sure.

I was a bit let down to find out my watch wouldn’t show the pace correctly on it’s own. I really thought an upgrade in my watch would fix that issue! Oh well. It’s just a matter of me remembering to put the footpod on. Since I switch my shoes around a lot I tend to forget it.
I didn’t really have a mileage goal when the year started but I didn’t expect all my races to be canceled or deferred either. I am at 1546 miles as of today so my goal is to get to 1600 by the end of the year. Hope I get to run an actual race in 2021. Virtual races just don’t interest me.
You ran a lot of miles! I really think we’ll be back on the race courses in 2021.
Sounds like you did a lot of fun things this week!
I actually love Pilates, but I already have Pilates workouts that I enjoy, so I haven’t checked out the Peloton workouts yet. Or the Barre ones, and I enjoy Barre, too! I guess it’s like other areas of my life — jack of all trades, master of none, LOL!
Breath is life. Ok, couldn’t resist. Enjoy your holidays!
I tried the Peloton barre class again and was pretty sore afterwards (not in a good way!). Maybe it is a bit too challenging for my stupid hamstrings right now. Some of the small “corrections” in the Pilates class didn’t translate well on video for me. I mean, we were moving our pelvic bones but I couldn’t see it in the instructor.
Another busy fun filled week for you! I am also not a pilates person even if they are Peloton classes! Glad you got your free coffee drinks 🙂 Have a great week ahead
I totally plan my workouts around those freebie drinks! I feel like I need to earn them.
A great week. If you can already do a headstand, sounds like the Pilates classes were too easy for you. My mileage goal is usually “further than last year” which I’ve achieved already this year: I’m going to try for 1200 miles next year then keep at that level for the future. I have done 100 miles a month all but one month since May so should be possible. Love your free coffees – when will you ever have to pay for one?!
I think if we counted it would be 50 free drinks for the year, and when I pay for them it will be 5 for the year! Paying for them will hurt. Good job on exceeding your mileage goal this year!
Nice week for you! I’m not a pilates fan–I like yoga better. And running in the snow is fun!
I haven’t been to Frankenmuth but I’ve always wanted to go there. Looks really festive!
I did miss that the Frankenmuth Brewery was only offering take out food. Their burgers and Christmas Ale are really good! The town is especially enchanting when there’s snow on the ground. It’s hard not to be in the Christmas spirit after a visit there.
Every week I read your post I tell myself that I should apply again for the Starbucks credit card. I also want free drinks. I like the 2021 challenge but I don’t have a Strava account (not a big fan of it). For next year I will be looking into running at least 100 miles each month. If my running goes as well as it is now then it should not be a problem.

If the sign up bonus goes to 6,500 stars again for sure get one! You really have been doing so well with your running this year. Good for you!!
Right now it is 4,500.
I didn’t set a goal since I was broken to start the year, but am working toward somewhere between 750 and 800 and very happy with that.
Nicely done on the stars. I got the card offer and thought of you.
I have a sloth mask. Had no idea they were such a thing

A sloth mask? how fun!
I love pilates and find it really engaging! Sorry it was not a very good introduction to it! Maybe try an in-person class one day as a final shot!
Otherwise what a solid week of workouts – I love the Christmassy Feel of this post too! Looking forward to it. My husband’s 40th birthday is on Boxing Day so we have lots to celebrate!
Happy 40th to him! I am not very familiar with Boxing Day. Besides celebrating your husband’s birthday, are there any special traditions that happen on Boxing Day?
So in my head, I envisioned scapular pushups to be more like triceps pushups, but I just looked it up and see how different they are. Obviously, I had not heard of them before.
I would love to go to Bronner’s! A local jewelry store sells huge beautiful ornaments that are then boxed in Bronner’s boxes. I remember looking them up several years ago when I bought a few of their ornaments.
Merry Christmas!

Those pushups were really weird! I guess they hit a few muscles we usually don’t workout – I was surprised how sore I was after that workout!
Oooh! I love that store! I’m a total Christmas junkie, but this year I ordered our family ornament on Zulily (it’s a jokey pandemic one) and haven’t been able to embrace too many of the other festivities.
We have a neighbor who does the light show, and my old boss is going on the Great Christmas Light Fight. I think it’s so cool, but my talents don’t lie in that direction.
We got a 2020 “stink, stank, stunk” ornament from a store locally. Surprisingly, Bronner’s did not have any of the funny 2020 ornaments. Not sure if they were already sold out of them, or maybe it just didn’t fit their style. We love to watch that TV show! We always wonder what time of year they are decorating for the show. Do they decorate in July or something? I bet that’s quite a story when it happens in your town.
1,500 Miles, Well Done – Stoked For Ya – I Appreciate The Positive Post – Very Enjoyable Photos – Enjoy The Family Time – Happy Holidays And Merry Merry
Cheers
